Assistant United States Attorney Derek Hines, Weiss' deputy, appeared in the charging papers alongside his boss and two other assistant US attorneys, indicating that he was instrumental in Hunter's criminal case. According to Hines' LinkedIn profile, he served as Special Counsel to ex-FBI director Louis Freeh at his private firm, Freeh Group International Solutions, a lobbying and risk management' consultancy that collaborated with Hunter on international markets that is currently under scrutiny by lawmakers. Freeh worked with Hunter on a $3 million contract as a result of his federal criminal investigation and is being investigated by Congress.

Since his family received $1 million from a convicted tycoon, Republican lawmakers suspect the 53-year-old of influence peddling. The payments came two years after the then-vice president and top Romanian officials held anti-corruption meetings.
