Monty Don on gardening: Michaelmas daisies adds a touch of late-summer color to the garden

MONTY DON : As the summer comes to an end, Michaelmas daisies - or asters as they are also known - are simply amazing. They aren't showy plants, but they are often charming, occasionally sublime, and always good for attracting insects. The novi-belgii cultivars are among the easiest asters to grow. These aren't Belgian at all, and they came from New York and had a bad name for years due to their susceptibility to mildew, but they do have a stunning range of colors, from the lilac 'Ada Ballard' to the deep plum colour of 'Winston S Churchill.' Aster novae-angliae, the New England asters, are less likely to mildew. However, there isn't such a large variety of cultivars available. 'Barr's Violet' is a lovely purple, as is 'Violetta.' Both 'Lou Williams' and 'Septemberrubin' are on the pink side of plum plum. All of the above are the happiest in moist soil, so dig in a lot of organic matter when planting and mulching more thickly in spring. They flower best in full sun, as they do for most asters. The powdery mildew that can infect Michaelmas daisies is a fungus that starts on the underside of the leaf blades and then expands rapidly, blowing by the wind. Since they act as hosts to the mildew, keeping all weeds down helps a lot.
