Lloyd Carr Life

Lloyd Henry Carr Jr. (born July 30, 1945) is a retired American football player and mentor.

He served as the head football coach at the University of Michigan from 1995 to the 2007 season.

The Michigan Wolverines' record of 122–40 was compiled and won or shared five Big Ten Conference titles (1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2004) was under Carr's direction.

The Associated Press named Carr's 1997 squad as the national champion.

He had a record of working against top-ranked opponents, 20-8.

In 2011, Carr was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a mentor.

Youth and education

Carr was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee, and when he was ten years old, he and his family migrated to Riverview, Michigan. Carr's photograph is also on display in the Riverview Community High School gym lobby, where he quarterbacked the Pirates to a 1962 conference championship. Carr played college football and college baseball at the University of Missouri for three seasons, as well as a season at Northern Michigan University (NMU) while earning his M.A. Is there a role for education in education? He played for the NMU and led the Wildcats to an undefeated season in 1967. Carr had played under Dan Devine at Missouri, after fellow Riverview graduates Woody Widenhofer and Bill McCartney. Carr was moved to Northern Michigan after Rollie Dotsch, the man who primarily recruited him to Missouri, was named head coach.

Carr was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Michigan shortly after retiring. In 2008, he earned an honorary degree from Albion College.

Personal life

Karen Carr's first wife, Lloyd Carr, attended Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Laurie Carr married his second wife, Laurie, in 1994, just one year before he became Michigan's head coach. Both of them were married in their second marriage. The couple lived in Ann Arbor until 2019, when they moved to South Carolina. Laurie was diagnosed with cancer during her short stay in the city. In 2020, they returned to Ann Arbor, where she underwent medical attention at the University of Michigan Hospital. Laurie Carr died of cancer at the age of 70.

Early coaching career

Carr's teaching career began as an assistant at Nativity High School in Detroit, Michigan (1968–691) and Belleville High School (1970–73). He began teaching John Glenn High School in Westland, Michigan, in 1973, receiving Regional Class A Coach of the Year awards in 1975 after an 8–1 season.

Carr's collegiate experience began with two seasons as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University (1976–77), followed by two seasons as an assistant coach at Illinois (1978–79) under head coach Gary Moeller. He was briefly the defensive backs coach at West Virginia in the summer of 1980 under head coach Don Nehlen before going to Michigan in the fall to work under head coach Bo Schembechler. He was reunited with Moeller, who was returning as an assistant coach, at Michigan. Carr served as the team's defensive secondary coach for his first seven seasons and then defensive coordinator from 1987 to 1994. Carr was given the title of assistant head coach when Moeller succeeded Schembechler in 1990.

According to Yahoo Sports, Brady considered moving out of Michigan before his coach Lloyd Carr convinced him to stay in Ann Arbor. Brady was buried in the Wolverines' depth chart for the two years that followed, despite being dissatisfied with the field as a redshirt freshman. Brady is accused of breaking into Carr's office and requesting to be released in order to investigate transfer options during this stretch. Carr told Brady, 'It'll be the biggest mistake of your life,' Carr told Brady, per Yahoo.
