After returning her to her Minneapolis apartment in 2018, Jingyao Liu, a well-known internet entrepreneur in China who established JD.com, was accused of raping her. Jingyao Liu, then a 21-year-old senior at the university, was reportedly involved in the incident after the pair attended a booze-filled dinner with wealthy Chinese executives. She was the only woman in the world. Liu, then in his mid-40s, plied her with alcohol and then smuggled her into his vehicle after the dinner, later raping her in her apartment. Liu, the head of his $77 Beijing-based company this year, denied raping, although the woman did not press criminal charges. Attorneys on both sides, however, characterized the situation - some of which was caught on apartment building security cameras - as "a public opinion mishaste that has absorbed significant public interest and brought significant pain to the parties and their families." The deal came just two days before the civil trial was set to begin in court on Monday, with seven men and five women selected to preside over the now called-off hearing.
