Stansfield cited Marvin Gaye, Chic, and Barry White as her first musical influences as a child of Soul & the Supremes.

Stansfield won the Battle for a Star singing competition held at the Talk of the Town nightclub in 1980, and Devil Records released her first single "Your Alibis" in 1981. On Granada Television, she appeared on the television show Bring Me the Head of Light Entertainment in 1982. Stansfield also signed a recording deal with Polydor Records at the same time.

Music career

Stansfield and former schoolmates Ian Devaney and Andy Morris, who had worked together on a school musical project, began to perform together and formed the band Blue Zone in 1986. They wrote some songs, arranged a demonstration, and then turned it around to record companies. In 1985, the little indie label Rockin' Horse Records was established, and Arista Records bought it a year later. Arista released "On Fire" in October 1989, the first two singles since releasing "Love Will Wait" and "Finest Thing" in 1986. Just as the single was soaring in the charts (number ninety-nine in the United Kingdom), it was taken down by the record company in the aftermath of the King's Cross fire. "Thinking About His Baby," the band's new album, "Thinking About His Baby," was released in January 1988 and debuted at number seventy-nine in the United Kingdom.
