Gymnastics career
At the age of five, Lisa Mason began training at Huntingdon Gym Club. She has represented her country in three European championships and world championships tournaments, Commonwealth Games, and Olympic Games. At the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, she represented England and earned a gold medal in the vault as well as a silver medal in the team competition.
She was the first British gymnast to qualify in finals in European and World Championships. She earned the highest ever finish in the All-Around for a British Gymnast in the World Championships in Tianjin, as well as assisting Britain in the introduction of the first-ever full team to the Olympic Games in Tianjin.
She has competed on three fronts, her first championship being won at the age of 14, making her the youngest gymnast to win the senior championship. She broke her arm when falling off the uneven bars at the junior British championships in 1995. She had two plates and twelve bolts embedded in the injury during the subsequent surgery. She returned to win the title of senior British champion six months after. She then defended the title twice a row, first for any gymnast. Lisa was the first British gymnast to win gold at a Grand Prix event. She took the Cottbus floor title in 1998, just shy of Russia's Yelena Prottzana and Svetlana Khorkina. She also gained medals on the circuit, Beam, and Vault events. By British Gymnastics, she was named "Master Gymnast."
Lisa returned to the sport in January 2013, after 12 years away from the sport, with the intention of qualifying for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Lisa was crowned English vault champion and placed 4th in the national British championships in March 2013 in her first return to action and after five months of preparation. Lisa continued to compete in the English and British championships the following year, winning a series of medals on vault and floor as well as finishing top 8 on both beam and bars.
