Lionel Hampton Life

Lionel Leo Hampton (April 20, 1908 – August 31, 2002) was an American jazz vibraphonist, pianist, percussionist, and bandleader.

Hampton performed with jazz musicians from Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman, and Buddy Rich to Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and Quincy Jones.

He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1992 and 1996 and was given the National Medal of Arts.

Personal life

Lionel Hampton married Gladys Riddle (1913–1971) in Yuma, Arizona, on November 11, 1936. Gladys was Lionel's business manager for a long time. Many musicians recall that Lionel played the music and Gladys owned the company.

Roy Ayers, a late jazz musician, gave him a pair of vibraphone mallets about 1945 or 1946.

During the 1950s, he had a keen interest in Judaism and raised funds for Israel. He created a King David suite and performed it in Israel with the Boston Pops Orchestra in 1953. Hampton converted to be a Christian Scientist later in life. Hampton was also a Prince Hall freemason.

Hampton's apartment caught fire and destroyed his possessions; he was uninjured.
