Linus Yale Jr. Career

Career

Yale soon joined his father in his company and introduced some innovative locks that used permutations and cylinders. Linus Yale Jr., who died in 1858, became more involved with his father's lock business.

About 1860, Yale founded his own store in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, specializing in bank locks.

Henry Robinson Towne, a retired Henry Robinson Towne, incorporated Henry Robinson Towne's firm in Stamford, Connecticut, called the Yale Lock Manufacturing Company. Yale obtained numerous patents for his inventions throughout his career in lock manufacturing, as well as widespread client recognition for his his products.

Yale died of a heart attack while attempting to have his locks installed in a skyscraper, the Equitable Building, on a business trip to New York City in 1868, the same year that the Yale Manufacturing Company was established. His locks were already selling well, and Yale Locks, under Towne's leadership, became the country's best lock manufacturer.

Yale's Locks also play a major role in today's defense systems. Yale developed the system known as the "clock lock" in his later years and introduced the double lock, which allowed two locks to be used in a single case in different combinations. His locks and boxes for the post-offices have been recognized for their use and worldwide adoption. Linus Yale Jr., who is omnipresent today's commonly used combination locks, owes their thanks to them.

In 2006, Yale was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

He had three children by his wife Catherine Brookes. Madeline Yale Wynne's daughter madeline Yale Wynne, a philantropist, and John Brooks Yale and Julian Yale, both of his sons, became members of the Union League of New York, as well as other Yale alumni.
