Lillias White (born July 21, 1951) is an American singer and actress of stage, television, and film, who is especially known for her appearances in Broadway musicals.

In 1989, she received an Obie Award for her appearance in Hard Times' Off-Broadway musical Romance.

In 1997, she received the Tony Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical for portraying Sonja in Cy Coleman's The Life of a Woman.

In 2010, she was nominated for a Tony Award for her role as Funmilayo in Fela Kuti's Fela!

Calliope on the Disney animated film Hercules depicting Evette, as well as her role as Fat Annie (Cadillac's mother) in the Netflix series The Get Down.

On PBS' Great Performances with Reba McEntire and in the PBS documentary In Performance at the White House, she has also appeared as Bloody Mary in Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific.

She has appeared in concert with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and Carnegie Hall.

Career

White, a native of Brooklyn, New York, made her Broadway debut in Barnum in 1981. She studied the role of Effie in the initial 1981 Dreamgirls production and was involved in the 1987 revival, for which she received the Drama League Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

White has appeared on Broadway in Cats, Carrie, and Once on This Island, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Chicago, and Fela! Sonja was a winner of the Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards for her portrayal of a world-weary, no-nonsense, streetwise hooker, in Cy Coleman's The Life. In Hard Times (1989), White performed in the William Finn musical Romance, for which she received the Obie Award, Dinah Was (1998) at the Gramercy Theatre as a singer, and the production of Regina Taylor's musical Crowns (2002), for which she and the cast received the AUDELCO Award, Outstanding Ensemble Performance. In 2014, White appeared Off-Broadway in the Play While I Still Live by Billy Porter. In 2015, White appeared in Scott Wakefield Off-Broadway's World premiere of Alan Govenar's musical Texas in Paris.

Bernhardt, André De Shields, Stefanie Powers, and Georgia Engel appeared in the latest musical Gotta Dance, directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, which opened in Chicago's Bank of America Theatre on December 13, 2015, and ran through January 17, 2016.

In August 2022, it was revealed that White would play Hermes in the Broadway musical Hadestown, which would premiere on September 13, 2022. She is the first female to play the role.

White twice reprimanded an audience member from the stage for recording the performance during a Hadestown performance on October 12, 2022. White was unaware that this audience member was not recording, and that she was actually using a captioning device to know the conversation of the musical. Official apology were released by the theatre and production, which reiterated their future contributions to accessibility and gave the audience member a free ticket to make up for the occurrence. As the actress' social media pages had been flooded with ageist and racial insults in reaction to the incident, White refused to apologize for the incident herself, though the audience member took to social media to ask followers to avoid harassing White.

Dreamgirls, Funny Girl in 2002, and Hair in 2004 were among White's concert appearances to benefit the Actors' Fund of America. She appeared in PBS Great Performances' concert version of South Pacific, which was broadcast by PBS Great Performances in 2006. In a concert of works by Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, George, and Ira Gershwin commemorating the orchestra's 50th anniversary in July 2003, she appeared with the Brooklyn Philharmonic. She has appeared with the New York Pops in a Carnegie Hall concert in March 2004. In November 2007, White appeared on "Barbara Cook's Spotlight," a Kennedy Center performance, performing songs by Cy Coleman. In September 2014, she appeared in a performance at Lincoln Center's Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. From Brooklyn to Broadway, she has performed with her one-woman cabaret group From Brooklyn to Broadway, which she first appeared at Athen's Place in New York City in March 2000. In 2003 at the Plush Room, she appeared on the program in San Francisco.
