Lill-babs Career

Early life and career

Barbro Svensson was born in Järvsö, 290 km (180 miles) north of Stockholm, and Lill-Babs was born Lill-Babs. Ragnar and Britta Svensson, her parents, lived in a tiny cottage without running water for nine years. At the age of 11, she first sang in a church. Her first public appearance was with a colleague of her father accompanying her on the accordion.

In Järvsö 1953, Svensson's first public appearance was at Barnens dag. She began singing with Lasse Schönning's orchestra straight away. When she appeared on the radio program Morgonkvisten ("Early Morning") in 1954, she was "discovered." Simon Brehm, a musician and record producer, loved her and took her to Stockholm, where she made her professional debut at the Bal Palais restaurant. Brehm was the boss of Svensson until his death in 1967. Svensson's stage name "Lill-Babs" was a play on words implying a link to the older, more popular, singer Alice Babs. "Min mammas boogie" ("My Mamma's Boogie") and "Svar till 'Ung och kär'" ("Answer to 'Young And In Love) were two songs on her first music album in 1954, a gramophone record with two songs: "Mama's Boogie") and "Ung och kär" ("Answer to 'Young And In Love"). Monica was born in Järvsö and gave birth to her first child, Monica, only after finding herself pregnant.

Lill-Babs made her television debut in 1957 and her first folkpark performance using her birth name in 1958. During her long career, she visited every folk park in Sweden.

Lill-Babs performed Stikkan Anderson's ""rdu kär i mej ännu Klas-Göran" in 1959. Are You Still in Love With Me, Klas-Göran? "Her recording of it became a huge success.' At the Nöjeskatten theater, she appeared in the play Fly mig en greve ("Fly Me a Count") on stage for the first time in 1958. She appeared in the films Svenska Floyd and Enn nolla för mycket ("One Zero Too Many" also).

Eurovision and later career

Lill-Babs performed Sweden in the 1961 Eurovision Song Contest with the song "April, april." Siw Malmkvist had been in the national final, but Lill-Babs had been selected to perform the song in Cannes. She appeared at Melodifestivalen three times in 1960, 1961 (her own two songs did not win) and 1973 without winning, both 1966 and 1973. She did not win in the Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix in 1969. She began a career in West Germany, where she appeared in many films shortly after Eurovision. She has also released two English-language solo singles for the United States market.

Lill-Babs appeared on The Beatles in 1963 when she was the main guest star on the teen music show Drop-In on Sveriges Television (SVT). The then-unknown band begged for her autograph. In Gothenburg and Kronprinsen, Trädgr'n, Lill-Babs performed several shows in bars in Berns, Trädgn, törn. "Welcome to the World" by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA wrote and performed her 1971 hit song "Welcome to the World." The four future members of ABBA performed on it. She appeared in a Kar de Mumma revue in Folkan and appeared in Annie Oakley's musical Annie Get Your Gun at Gothenburg's Scandinavium Theatre.
