A man who has been remarked as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time is being remembered as part of a moving National Archives exhibition. Bernhard 'Bert' Trautmann is one of the many Prisoners of War from World War Two to feature in the Great Escapes: Remarkable Second World War Captives event at the west London venue. The exhibition, which details some of the real life experiences of prisoners of war and civilian internees during WW2, has been put on to mark the 80th anniversary of the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III on March 24, 1944. Trautmann's story stands out as one of the most iconic, having been captured as a Nazi in Germany and kept in a Lancashire prisoner of war camp being later turning his life around to become first team goalkeeper for Manchester City.
