'The Old Portsmouth Gaol', a HMP Kingston in Portsmouth, Hampshire, has been converted into luxurious apartments. Following the abolishment of capital punishment in 1965, the former lifers' prison, which was built in 1877, only held men serving life terms. Leslie Grantham, the Eastenders' villain, died after being shot and killed a German taxi driver before he portrayed the Eastenders villain 'Dirty Den'. Archibald Hall, a Scottish serial killer, and Nazi war criminal Anthony Sawoniuk are among others. After the prison doors closed for the last time in March 2013, St Cross Homes' conversion program began in 2020.
