Leon Fleisher Life

Leon Fleisher (born July 23, 1928) is an American pianist and conductor.

Early life and studies

Fleisher was born in San Francisco on July 23, 1928, the son of Bertha and Isidor Fleisher. His parents were Jewish immigrants, his father from Odessa, and his mother from Poland. His family was struggling. His father's company was hat-making, while his mother's ambition was to make her son a natural concert pianist. At the age of four, the flusher began learning the piano. At age eight, he made his public debut. At age nine, he became one of the few children prodigies to be admitted to study with Artur Schnabel, who taught him in a tradition that descends directly from Beethoven to Carl Czerny and Theodor Leschetizky. He has also worked with Maria Curcio and Karl Ulrich Schnabel. Fleisher performed at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic under Pierre Monteux at age 16, and Monteux referred to him as "the pianistic find of the century."
