Leo Nomellini Life

Leo Joseph Nomellini (June 19, 1924 – October 17, 2000) was a Hall of Fame American football offensive and defensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers and professional wrestler.

He played for Minnesota in college.

Early life

Nomellini was born in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy, and migrated to Minnesota as an infant before heading to Crane, Illinois, where he attended Crane High School. He joined the Marine Corps after high school. He first started playing football in 1942.

After the war, he was granted a football scholarship to the University of Minnesota, where he became a second-time All-American and the 49ers' first-ever NFL draft pick in 1950. Nomellini, a Minnesota native, was a member of Delta Chi fraternity.

Professional career

Nomellini was selected in the 1st round (11th overall) of the 1950 NFL draft, the first draft pick in the history of the San Francisco 49ers. He appeared in 174 regular-season games and 166 for his 14-year career as a professional.

He spent time with the 49ers on both offensive and defensive tackle, winning All-Pro accolades at both positions. He was selected six times to the All-NFL team, both offensive and defensive: two years on offense and four years on defense. "He was as strong as three bulls," 49ers teammate Joe Perry said. "He'd slap you on the back and knock you twenty feet." Nomellini was selected as a defensive tackle on the NFL's all-time roster. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969, and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1977.
