Pro career
With a string of victories, he began his lucrative career in Puerto Rico. Despite beating future two-time world champion Lupe Pintor, Cruz was still a virtual unknown when given the opportunity to win the WBC world Jr. Featherweight championship. Despite losing by a small amount in the 13th round against world champion Wilfredo Gómez, his name in the boxing world has increased since that tournament. Cruz kept fighting and winning until he was given his second world championship attempt, this time by WBA world champion Sergio Palma in Buenos Aires. Cruz was defeated by a decision in 15 by the Argentine world champion, but Cruz became the world champion after defeating Palma by a decision on June 12, 1982, beating Palma by a margin in 15 rounds.
At Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Cruz in his first defense knocked out Benito Badilla of Chile in eight rounds. Cruz became the universal world champion after Gómez left his WBC title vacant soon after. Then beat South Korean challenger Soon-Hyun Chung by a vote in 15 after dropping him in round eight; also in San Juan. Cruz put his name on the line in August 1983 against Nicaraguan challenger Cleo Garcia at Santo Domingo in his first defense at home. Cruz won the title by a landslide.
Cruz went to Milan in February 1984, facing his crown over Puerto Ricon Victor Luvi Callejas, but losing the WBA world junior featherweight title.
