Leo Buscaglia Career

Life and career

Felice Leonardo Buscaglia was born in Los Angeles, California, on March 31, 1924, into the care of an Italian immigrant family. He spent his early years in Aosta, Italy, before heading back to the United States for education. He attended Theodore Roosevelt High School and was a student. Buscaglia served in the US Navy during World War II; he did not see combat, but he saw its aftermath in his work in the military hospital's dental section, assisting in the reconstruction of shattered faces. Using G.I. Bill Buena enrolled at the University of Southern California, where he received three degrees (BA 1950, MA 1954, PhD 1963) before joining the faculty.

He was the first to state and promote the belief that hugs are essential to life: 5 to survive, 8 to maintain, and 12 to thrive.

Buscaglia was named Professor at Large on campus, one of only two such titles at that time.
