She was introduced to the ballroom scene a year later and became a vital part of the New York community. Ballroom is a counterculture spawned by the majority of impoverished Black and Latino LGBT youth, where they could freely display themselves through dance competitions and pageantry. Ballroom legends Yolanda Jourdan & Alloura Jourdan Zion are among Maldonado's key influence behind her vogue, according to Maldonado.
She is the first openly transgender woman to appear on MTV's Best Dance Crew Season 4 in 2009, where her crew made it to the top five, and her crew is the first-ever openly transgender woman to appear on MTV's America's Best Dance Crew Season 4. Maldonado's signature hair flip step, "The Leiomy Lolly," was adopted by musicians and celebrities such as Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears after appearing on television. Maldonado made her signature move in Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" music video. Though the events she has made have made worldwide, her name hasn't always been given as the source of the invention.
She continued to appear in other music videos, such as Icona Pop's "All Night" music video, and Russian pop singer Philipp Kirkorov's "вет настроени сини "" (Mood colour is blue).
Maldonado is the choreographer for the show Pose's ballroom scenes. She also appeared in Pose as Florida Ferocity.
Maldonado is one of the judges on the HBO Max show Legendary, a dance competition influenced by the ballroom world. In weekly vogue battles, ten Houses face each other, with each episode having a different theme. Maldonado appeared as a judge alongside actor Jameela Jamil, celebrity stylist Law Roach, and rapper Megan Thee Stallion. When asked why she joined the show, Maldonado said, "I think they will learn how important ballroom culture is for us and our families." They'll also experience how much preparation it takes for these balls, how exciting it is for us to be recognized and have a platform to showcase our talent."
