Ledisi Life

Ledisi Anibade Young (born March 28, 1972), also known as Ledisi, is an American R&B and jazz recording artist, singer, and actress.

In Yoruba, her first name means "to bring forth" or "to come here."

Ledisi formed Anibade in 1995.

She founded LeSun Records with Sundra Manning after unsuccessfully attempting to get the group to a major label.

Inibade and Ledisi released an album titled "Soulsinger" (black and white on the LeSun Music independent label), which included the song Take Time, which gained significant airplay from San Francisco area radio stations.

Ledisi, a twelve-time Grammy Award winner, has released eight studio albums between 2000 and 2017. Ledisi re-released her first major label signed album, titled Soulsinger: The Revival, in 2000.

In 2001, Ledisi and her troupe toured the country.

Ledisi's second album, Feeling Orange but Not Often Blue, was released in 2002.

At the California Music Awards, the album was named "Outstanding Jazz Album." Ledisi signed a record deal with Verve Forecast in late 2006 and released her third album, titled Lost & Found, on August 28, 2007, which sold nearly 217,000 copies and received two Grammy awards, one for Best New Artist.

It's Christmas, Ledisi's album was released in 2008. Ledise's fourth album Turn Me Loose, which earned her two Grammy nominations and her fifth album Pieces of Me (2011), which debuted on the US Billboard 200 album chart at number eight, became her first top-ten album of her career and her highest-charting album to date.

It also received three Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album, at the 54th Grammy Awards.

In 2013, she received a nomination for Best R&B Performance at the 55th Grammy Awards for her collaboration with fellow R&B and jazz singer Robert Glasper on his fifth album Black Radio (2012).

She released her sixth album The Truth in 2014, earning critical praise and modest success.

Early life

Ledisi was born in New Orleans and raised Catholic in Oakland, California, and was raised Catholic. Ledisi appeared on stage for the first time with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra at age 8. Ledisi grew up in Oakland, California, where she now attends McChesney Junior High School, now Edna Brewer Middle School.

She was unsure of her singing abilities and would sing only on request if her classmates in her gym class would request that she sing Deniece Williams' version of Black Butterfly, bringing the entire classroom audience under her spell. As she performed more regularly, her music career flourished, and she received a grant to study opera and piano for five years at University of California Berkeley's Young Musicians Program. She was nominated for a Shellie award for her role in a production of The Wiz That nomination, which would have her to serve as a long time cast member with the San Francisco cabaret, Beach Blanket Babylon.

Ledisi worked at a beach Blanket Babylon and waited tables part-time. She didn't begin to make a name for herself in the Bay Area's local club scenes until she started playing regularly at local clubs such as Cafe DuNord, The Elbo Room, Bruno's, Mecca, and Rasselas.

Musical career

Ledisi formed Anibade in 1995 and gained clout in San Francisco Bay, California, with a cult-like community of followers who referred to themselves as "Ledheads" and greet her with love at every performance, singing along verbatim to songs that were unrecorded at the time, making them well-known by her followers. Ledisi met keyboardist Sundra Manning and recorded an album called "Soulsinger" and then shopped it around to several major retailers, but none of them turned her down.

Ledisi's debut on her own, LeSun Records, in January 2000. "Soulsinger," "Get Outta My Kitchen," and "Good Lovin" were among the album's fan favorites. Ledisi, the Bay Area's premier, began performing outside of the Bay Area following his release of Soulsinger.

Ledisi's second album, Feeling Orange, But Sometimes Blue, was also released in 2002. The album included songs "Feeling Orange But Occasionally Blue" and "Autumn Leaves." At the California Music Awards in 2003, Ledisi received "Outstanding Jazz Album" for Feeling Orange, but Occasionally Blue.

On Tommy Boy Records, Ledisi re-released Soulsinger as Soulsinger: The Revival.

She signed with Verve and released "Blues in the Night," which appeared on the tribute album "We All Love Ella: Celebrating the First Lady of Song" in 2006.

Lost & Found, Ledisi's third album, was released in August 2007. Ledisi said she was unsure of if she wanted to remain in the music business. Ledisi's reaction to her illness, she wrote the poem "Alright" to reflect her personal life. "Alright" became the lead single and debuted at #45 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart, and it debuted at #45. "In The Morning," the album's second single, debuted at #49 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart, earning the album's second position. Other songs from the album chart were not released as singles, but not as singles. On the Hot R&B charts, "Think of You" charted at #71, while "Joy" charted at #01 on the Hot R&B charts and #29 on the Adult R&B Airplay charted reached #71 on the Hot R&B charts, charting at #71 on the Hot R&B charts and #29 on the Adult R&B charted.

The album received two Grammy Awards, one for Best New Artist. Ledisi's 2008 tour to promote her album Lost & Found continued her tour. The album had sold 216,894 copies by January 2009.

Ledisi's Christmas album, It's Christmas, was released in September 2008, which included the singles "This Christmas" and "Children Go Where I Send Thee." In December 2008, the first one was published. On the Hot R&B charts at #113, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "Give Love On Christmas Day" charted.

In 2008, Ledisi performed "The Man I Love" as a blues singer in the film Leatherheads.

Turn Me Loose, Ledisi's fourth studio album, was announced in 2009. On August 18, 2009, the album was released. "I don't want to be boxed in," Ledisi, a seasoned UK R&B writer, explained the album's title: "I don't want to be boxed in." Since I do EVERYTHING, let me be myself as a performer and singer! "Not just one particular style!" Raphael Saadiq, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, James "Big Jim" Wright, and Carvin & Ivan employed R&B writer-producers such as Raphael Saadiq, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, as well as Jimmy "Big Jim" Wright and Terry Lewis. "Goin' Thru Changes" was the album's first single. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and James "Big Jim" Wright produced "Higher Than This."

Ledisi made her debut on BET's Blackgirls Rock in 2010, alongside Marsha Ambrosius, Kelly Price, and Jill Scott.

On his North American INTIMACY Tour, Ledisi toured with R&B/soul singer Kem. On March 10, 2011, Ledisi's opening act in Atlanta, Georgia, revealed that she had completed recording her fifth studio album, Pieces of Me, on March 9, 2011. It was announced on June 14, 2011. In its first week, it debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 album chart, selling 38,000 copies. The album's title track was used as the album's lead single.

Pieces of Me, Ledisi's debut on Tour, she promoted her album. The Pieces of Me Tour attracted 22 sold-out shows around North America. She received three nominations for the album, Best R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song on her second album "Pieces of Me" on the 2012 Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album, Best R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song.

On Time Home Entertainment, Inc., Ledisi's first book, Better Than Alright: Finding Peace, Love & Power, was published in 2012. The book, which is an exciting collaboration with ESSENCE, is jam packed with the singer's personal photos, quotes, songs, and a slew of her struggle for her beauty, talent, and power.

Ledisi announced her second headlining tour, B.G.T.Y., on April 6, 2012, with Eric Benet as the opening act.

Ledisi's latest album The Truth in collaboration with Essence Magazine in March 2014, and now Grammy Award Laureate Robert Glasper was her opening act.

Ledisi appeared in Selma, an American historical drama film directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Paul Webb and DuVernay in April 2014. It is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march for voting rights in Alabama, led by James Bevel, Martin Luther King Jr., and Hosea Williams. Ledisi sings "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" in the film and on the official film soundtrack. Initially expected to attend the 57th Grammy Awards as part of a salute to the Selma March, alongside Common and John Legend (who performed in their Oscar-winning duet "Glory") Ledisi's fan was disappointed by the Recording Academy and recording artist Beyoncé who appeared in her place. The reaction on social media in Ledisi's snubbing and Beyoncé's performance was mixed. She was nominated for Best R&B Performance for the single "Like This" from her seventh album The Truth in 2015. "Drunk in Love" took home a trophy from Beyoncé and Jay Z.

Ledisi released "High" a single produced by Darhyl "Hey DJ" Camper and Rex Rideout in May 2017. Let Love Rule, her eighth studio album, was released on September 22, 2017. Best R&B Album, Best R&B Showcase, and Best Traditional R&B Performance were among her three more nominations at the 60th Grammy Awards in January 2018. Ledisi received the album's 'Soul Certified Award.'

Ledisi helped the BET Awards honor Anita Baker, the night's Lifetime Achievement Award winner, with a tribute to the singer's 1986 ode "Sweet Love."

Ledisi was at the time a participant in the Aretha Franklin Tribute, which was organized by the annual award ceremony known as Black Girls Rock. "Ain't No Way" was Ledisi's interpretation of the hit "Ain't No Way" that was released.

In October 2018, Ledisi performed with Adam Lambert in NBC's A Very Wicked Halloween: Celebrating 15 Years on Broadway, before a live audience at the Marquis Theatre in New York, singing Wicked's "As Long as You're Mine" from Wicked.

On January 3, 2020, Ledisi published her second book, Don't Ever Lose Your Walk: How to embrace your walk on Chinweya Publishing, Inc. This book is both a memoir and a self-help book. Ledisi teaches how to survive rejection, sadness, and life while still being gracious with whatever is thrown your way. Ledisi published this book for the publishing company she and her family formed.

Ledisi revealed The Wild Card, her ninth studio album, in June 2020. Lost & Found, the album's debut, was released on August 28, 2020, just 13 years after her major label debut. Ledisi's first appearance under her independent label Listen Back Entertainment / BMG is the Wild Card.

Ledisi's tenth album and first live recording under her name Listen Back Entertainment, Ledisi Live at The Troubadour, on April 30, 2021. Ledisi's second album was released with her new brand.

On August 21, 2019, Ledisi Sings Nina had appeared live on August 21, 2019. (A Homage to Nina Simone). This project is dedicated to Nina Simone. Jules Buckley's Metropole Orkest and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Adonis Rose, are assisting Ledisi. Lisa Fisher, Lizz Wright, and Alice Smith, three Grammy Award winners, appear on this album. This was Ledisi's third project on her own in less than a year and her 11th studio recording.
