Lecy Goranson Career

Career

Goranson trained in Chicago and later became Becky Conner. It was only the second time she had auditioned for any part. She appeared on the show for five seasons before transferring to Vassar College in 1992. Becky's academic schedule allowed her to continue working part-time as Becky. Becky's producers and writers wrote scenes for her sparingly under her new name. Becky's elopement with her boyfriend Mark was triggered by Goranson's departure.

The producers wanted to bring back the character from the previous season. Goranson was still unavailable, so Sarah Chalke auditioned and gained the role.

Chalke appeared in Becky for the remainder of the sixth season and the entire seventh season. Goranson was able to play Becky again while still attending college, replacing Chalke, as the show reached its eighth season. Goranson appeared on the show's eighth season, but by mid-season, she had scheduling conflicts with school again. On two occasions, Goranson had to pull out of scenes in which the Becky character was important: Darlene's wedding and a family's trip to Walt Disney World were both required. These episodes were played by Chalke. Goranson returned to play Becky towards the end of the season. Goranson, who was also enrolled in school at the time, declined to continue in the role in order not to cause scheduling conflicts. Chalke played in the ninth season, her last appearance in the role. Chalke appeared in season ten as the new king Andrea who tries to enlist Becky as a surrogate mother.

Goranson's appearances against Chalke became a running joke. "Where the hell have you been?" Goranson's first re-appearance was announced. When in character, a number of cast members made a remark. Chalke's sporadic appearances during Season 8 will be mocked in a, "Aren't you glad you're here this week?" Roseanne's remark. Even a glimpse into the future, with a mature and somewhat catatonic DJ played by John Goodman replacing Michael Fishman as the sole "no one" in the script. Both Beckys performed a parody of the Patty Duke Show's opening theme, with identical music and lyrics to the "identical cousins song," as well as William Schallert's appearance on the show.

Goranson appeared in several small films and appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Sex and the City, Damages and Fringe, shortly after the initial run of Roseanne. She is often credited as Alicia rather than Lecy Goranson in her post-Roseanne film roles. Sandra was a character in The Extra Man, which came as a limited release on July 30, 2010.

On April 28, 2017, it was announced that a revival of Roseanne was in the works, with the majority of the original cast and some of the original creators due to return. Goranson would reprise in his role as Becky in May 2017. Chalke would play a different role. On ABC, Roseanne's revival debuted on March 27, 2018. ABC cancelled the revival after a single season on May 29, 2018, following Roseanne Barr's inflammatory remarks about Valerie Jarrett (an advisor of former President Barack Obama).

ABC announced The Conners, a spin-off of Roseanne, on June 21, 2018, with all of the original cast members returning except for Barr herself. On October 16, 2018, the new show premiered.
