Review of the Dropout: According to CHRISTOPHER STEVENS, the charismatic Star Wars geek who swindled her way to millions

CHRISTOPHER STEVENS: Somebody has the courage to say it. Dr. Phyllis Gardner of The Dropout (BBC1) debunked Yoda, the little green alien who can't speak in the right way, as Laurie Metcalf says in The Dropout (BBC1). 'Science is real,' Gardner fumed to 19-year-old student entrepreneur and Star Wars geek Elizabeth Holmes (Amanda Seyfried). 'Yoda is a fictional green character with the ability to comprehend everything in the universe except for syntax and grammar.' This tirade failed to discredit Ernest Holmes, whose sole aim was to become a billionaire by inventing some new technology. The fact that nothing she invented actually worked did not discourage her - and certainly didn't discourage her from fraudulently raising hundreds of millions of dollars from gullible investors for her fake one-drop-of-blood miracle diagnostic device. The Dropout, a series that premiered on Disney+ in 2022, is a corporate true-crime tale that will not decide whether or demonise Holmes, the former poster girl for Silicon Valley whose fall from grace, was stunning. She is a special figure who rose above childhood mistrust and shyness to become a self-made CEO of a California tech firm.

Hacks Season 3 production has halted operations for the remainder of the Writers Guild of America strike

Though the Writer Guild of America strikes reaches its third day, another production fatalty has been reported, with HBO Max's Hacks halting filming. According to Deadline, sources close to the show announced that filming would be suspended for the duration of the writers strike. To be precise, the last writers strike in 2007/2008 lasted just over three months - 100 days, but considering how far apart the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) are, it could well last much, much longer.

In the meantime, the television presenter, 52, oozed Hollywood glamour in a figure-hugging one-shoulder black gown that showcased her svelte cleavage.
