Personal life
Ward was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Denis Ward (1941-1986), a geoscientist at UMKC, and Holly Ward (née Harvick, 1941–2005). She graduated from Hickman Mills High School in 1988 and received her B.F.A from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She is married to British stage director Matthew Warchus, with whom she has three children.
Career
Jenny Sanborn and Heavenly Friend made her Broadway debut in Carousel's 1994 revival as Jenny Sanborn and Heavenly Friend. Martha Jefferson appeared in the musical 1776 as Martha Jefferson. She appeared in Follies' 2001 revival as Young Sally, where she first met her future husband, director Matthew Warchus.
Ward portrayed Miss Honey in the new musical Matilda, based on Roald Dahl's book Matilda in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production at Stratford-upon-Avon. Ward began appearing in the West End in October 2011 and then on Broadway in 2013. Ward was nominated for the 2013 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
In 1995, she appeared in Jennie/Daisy in the musical Jack's Holiday. Ward appeared in Violet Karl in the 1996 musical Violet, for which she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.
