Ward was nominated for the Tony Award, Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance in the original Stratford-Upon-Avon, West End, and Broadway productions of the musical Matilda, and she was nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

Personal life

Ward was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Denis Ward (1941-1986), a geoscientist at UMKC, and Holly Ward (née Harvick, 1941–2005). She graduated from Hickman Mills High School in 1988 and received her B.F.A from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She is married to British stage director Matthew Warchus, with whom she has three children.

Jenny Sanborn and Heavenly Friend made her Broadway debut in Carousel's 1994 revival as Jenny Sanborn and Heavenly Friend. Martha Jefferson appeared in the musical 1776 as Martha Jefferson. She appeared in Follies' 2001 revival as Young Sally, where she first met her future husband, director Matthew Warchus.

Ward portrayed Miss Honey in the new musical Matilda, based on Roald Dahl's book Matilda in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production at Stratford-upon-Avon. Ward began appearing in the West End in October 2011 and then on Broadway in 2013. Ward was nominated for the 2013 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

In 1995, she appeared in Jennie/Daisy in the musical Jack's Holiday. Ward appeared in Violet Karl in the 1996 musical Violet, for which she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical. Arlene Murphy appeared in Exactly Like You, a 1999 film. Ward appeared as Helen in Stephen Sondheim's Saturday Night at the Second Stage Theatre in 2000. Emily appeared in the 2001 production of Time and Again as Emily.

Ward has appeared in many London venues, including in the West End, with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and elsewhere. Some of these performances include: The Vain Monologues (The Arts Theatre); Perpetles, A Winters Tale (with the RSC); Batboy, Caroline or Change; The Sound of Music as the Baroness (Chichester, Hampstead Park, 2005); and Du Barry Was a Lady (2001) and Johnny Johnson. Dear Evan Hansen, the youngest member of the Noel Coward Theatre since November 19, for which she was nominated Olivier Nomination and the West End revival of Heathers, and the West End revival of Heathers — was the most recent visit to the Noel Coward Theatre.

Ward appeared in numerous episodes of the 2005 film Broken News. She has appeared in an episode of Torchwood and Law and Order SVU, The Last Days of Lehman Brothers (BBC), Touch of Frost (ITV), Kiss Me First (Channel 4), The Contenders, a 1997 film directed by Jean Doumanian), Section 7: The Contenders, a student film.
