Lauren Duca Career

Career

Duca's 2013 debut as an online editorial intern for New York Magazine began. Duca worked as a reporter at The Huffington Post from 2013 to 2015. She began working as a freelance journalist in 2015, most likely writing for Teen Vogue.

In December 2016, Duca drew notice for an op-ed in Teen Vogue titled "Donald Trump is Gaslighting America," which claimed that before President-elect Donald Trump relied on deception to deceive the truth so his critics would question their own conclusions. The essay had been read 1.2 million times as of December 23, 2016, becoming the magazine's most viewed article. "[T]he Internet lit up with praise for [Duca's]'scorched-earth' op-ed," Katie Mettler of The Washington Post said. The essay was widely cited as a turning point in the fashion magazine's history, with a newly recognised political sphere.

Duca appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight on December 23, 2016, and Duca chastised host Tucker Carlson for refusing to talk and calling Carlson a "partisan hacker." In reaction, he told her that rather than political discourse, she "should stick to the thigh-high boots." referring to her earlier posts on pop star Ariana Grande. Duca's online bullying was followed by sexual assault, which included sexual harassment.

Duca began her new column at Teen Vogue in February 2017, "Thigh-High Politics." "Thigh High Politics" magazine "broke] down the news, and the public generally refuses to accept harmful propaganda." In July 2017, she created the phrase "I love my politics thigh-high" on a t-shirt and donated all of the proceeds from each $32 shirt to Planned Parenthood in Carlson's name. Over $10,000 had been raised as of December 2017. Duca has defended the political commentary on Teen Vogue's website, citing the inconsistency between critics who find young women's interests as insignificant for intellectual discourse and the reprimand young women face for not participating in the democratic process as the source of criticism.

Martin Shkreli, a retired pharmaceutical executive, tried to contact Duca a number of times and said she often on social media. Shkreli direct-messaged Duca on Twitter, edited a collage of Duca for his Facebook banner, and then superimposed her face on top of a photograph of Duca and her then-husband's portrait for his profile picture in early January 2017. Duca expressed her dissatisfaction with Shkreli's advances on Twitter, posting a screenshot of a direct message from Shkreli advising her that she should eat my own organs." Duca also posted screenshots of Shkreli's Twitter profile, asking the platform's founder and CEO Jack Dorsey how Shkreli's behavior were allowed on the platform. Shkreli's Twitter account was also suspended for breaching the website's policies prohibiting targeted harassment. Duca wrote a tweet on July 28, 2017, discussing Shkreli's securities-fraud trial and his sexual remarks on a Facebook livestream. "I would (still) rather eat my own organs, not to mention the Duca family." "I'll gladly chop off one of yours," says the touch me.

Billy Graham's death on February 21, 2018 was followed by Duca's tweeting: "The sad news today is that Billy Graham was still alive this whole time." Anyway, have fun in hell, bitch." Her book received some flak on the internet. Duca said in reaction to Fox News' coverage of her tweet: "The Fox article and segment on my stupid tweet are just amazing in their bad-faith consternation." Billy Graham called homosexuality 'a sinister form of perversion,' and argued that "AIDS is a punishment from God.' That's right, if hell is real."

In May 2018, it was revealed that Duca would be a visiting scholar at New York University's journalism department. "The Feminist Journalist," Duca's summer course, was taught in the summer of 2019. The class was hosted by the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and concentrated on intersections of feminist ideology and journalism practice, and was made up of high-school and college students. Students submitted a joint formal complaint about Duca's behavior during the course, saying, "We are disappointed at the department and NYU for recruiting a professor who is more interested in promoting her book than teaching a group of students eager to learn." Duca allegedly targeted an exchange student, writing that she "consistently attacked this student on the basis of a communication barrier that the student cannot overcome."

Duca's first book, titled How to Start a Revolution: Young People and the Future of American Politics, was published in September 2019.
