Life and career
Gustafsson was born in Väster and completed his secondary education at the Väster's Gymnasium and then on to Uppsala University, where he studied literature, aesthetics, sociology, and philosophy. He earned a doctorate degree in philosophy in 1960. He received a PhD in theoretical philosophy with a dissertation on speech and literature in 1978. He spent four years on the university's board of regents (1994-1998).
Gustafsson was already publishing novels and poetry regularly by 1960. He served as editor-in-chief of Bonniers Litterära Magasin from 1962 to 1972, in addition to his literary work. He began networking in Europe, particularly with the German authors in Group 47. He came to West Berlin in 1972, where he stayed for two years as a member of the DAAD fellowship. He travelled extensively during this period, including Australia, Singapore, Japan, Israel, and the United States. He attended and appeared in many international academic and cultural activities throughout his career. Gustafsson was described by John Updike as "the enviably desirable conferee, a red-bearded fish never out of water, loving books, theories, and debate as well as being exceptionally articulate."
Having been invited to visit the University of Texas at Austin by its Germanic Studies department in 1972 and then in 1974, and because Austin was his wife's hometown, he moved to the university in 1983, where he served as adjunct professor in Germanic Studies, teaching philosophy, and creative writing. He returned to Sweden in 2003 after studying for a research professorship at the university, but in 2006, he resigned. He lived in Stockholm and spent summers in Västmanland. On April 3, 2016, he died at the age of 79.
Gustafsson married three times: in 1961 to Madeleine Gustafsson (two girls), in 1982 to Alexandra Chasnoff (two children), and in 2005 to Agneta Blomqvist. Gustafsson converted to Judaism in 1981.
Lars Gustafsson declared in May 2009 that he would vote for the Pirate Party in the forthcoming European Parliament elections. However, he departed the Pirate Party in August 2010 in protest of the party's relationship with the WikiLeaks portal, which he accused of delivering death lists for the Taliban.
