He played college football as a defensive end at Northern Illinois and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers as an outside linebacker in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

Personal life
English served as the honorary chairman of the American Lung Association inaugural Fight For Air Climb in San Diego on February 27, 2011. High school career
English was named team co-captain, MVP, and First-team All-Suburban Catholic Conference both as a junior and senior at Marmion Academy in Aurora, Illinois. He made 98 tackles and six sacks while playing inside linebacker, and as a running back, he rushed for 312 yards on 38 plays (8.2 avg). He had 100 tackles as a junior, added two interceptions and two fumble recoveries during the junior season, along with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. College career
After playing in the first game of the season and suffering from an injury, England was a medical redshirt in 2004. He appeared in 11 games in 2005, starting nine. He had 78 tackles, seven of whom were for loss. He was a First-team All-MAC pick for the 2006 season. With 12 sacks and a school record, he dominated the league, while still racking 51 tackles and forcing four fumbles, the player played in all 13 games and tied for the first time.
English was the Mid-American Conference MVP of 2007 and was a consensus pick for a First-team All-American by Phil Steele in fourth as he finished with 17 tackles for loss, which ranked 18th in the NCAA. Also in 2007, English had 10.5 sacks which dominated the conference. Two passes were also deflected by the English. The Vern Smith Award, which is given to the MAC's best player as a senior (2008 Season), was again awarded to English as a senior (2008 Season). As a rookie, English had 23 tackles, but the Chargers had just four games in total and broke a foot in the 2010 training camp.
