Lance Darnell Gross (born July 8, 1981) is an American actor, model, and photographer of Ghanai descent best known for his role as Calvin Payne on the TBS sitcom Tyler Perry's House of Payne and OWN sitcom The Paynes, as well as other Tyler Perry productions such as the Meet the Browns (2008) film and Tyler Perry's Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (2013).

Forest Whitaker, Carlos Mencia, America Ferrera, and Regina King co-starred in 2010.

Marcus Finley, the Secret Service Agent, appeared in NBC's political drama Crisis.

Personal life

Eva Marcille, a comedian, started dating in July 2006. The couple became engaged on December 24, 2008, but then broke up in March 2010. Barbara Jefferson, a fashion stylist, later on May 23, 2015 The couple are parents to two children, one daughter, Berkeley Brynn Gross (born November 20, 2014), and one son, Lennon Gross (born July 10, 2018).

Early life and career

Gross was born in Oakland, California, the son of an African American mother and Ghanaian immigrant father, and later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, to attend and graduate from Bonanza High School. He then went to Howard University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in theater. He later worked at The Ivanna Chubbuck Studio, as well as the Tasha Smith Acting Studio.

Gross began his modeling for Karl Kani and appeared in music videos for singers including Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, and Mariah Carey. He appeared in Eve and The Bernie Mac Show in 2006. Tyler Perry discovered him while performing in the Tasha Smith Acting Studio. He was then portrayed as Calvin Payne on Perry's latest sitcom House of Payne. Gross plays Calvin, a young professional who has attended college for seven years. For this role, he has been given four NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Gross made his film debut in Meet the Browns, a romantic comedy. In 2010, he appeared in Our Family Wedding, alongside America Ferrera, in which they portrayed a newly engaged young couple whose wedding plans are interrupted by their families. In 2012, he appeared in The Last Fall, the story of a retired NFL player grappling with financial and family challenges. Gross currently plays a key role in Fox's musical drama.

He appears in the episodes "A Surprise for the Paynes," "Revelations of Payne," "A Confrontation of Payne," and "A Confrontation of Payne" with Allen Payne, Demetria McKinney, Larramie "Doc" Shaw and China Anne McClain.
