Kuupik Kleist Career

Early life and career

Kleist was born in Qullissat on 31 March 1958 to a Danish telegraphist and a Greenlandic mother, and his aunt and uncle raised him. He attended primary school in Qullissat from 1966 to 1972, but then went to a lower secondary school in Sisimiut until 1975. He was sent to Denmark alone and with no prior knowledge of the Danish people. From 1975 to 1978, he attended the Birker State School in Denmark. Kleist obtained a master's degree in social work from Roskilde University in 1983 (socionom). He taught journalism in Nuuk from 1988 to 1991.

Political career

Kleist was appointed Director of the Greenland Home Rule Government in 1996 (Direkt for hjemmestyrets udenrigskontor). He served in the Danish Parliament from 20 November 2001 to November 7, 2007 as the Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) group. According to a new home rule deal known as "self-rule," IA will be the first party to rule the autonomous Danish territories under an expanded home rule agreement (selvstyre). Although the self-rule agreement referred to a step toward complete independence from Denmark, Kleist's government is expected to place "any call for freedom [...] on the backburner," given his pledge to place a greater emphasis on social problems such as alcoholism, domestic violence, and a high suicide rate.

Following government scandals, Kleist had risen to office on a platform that required de-shaming.

Since 2007, he has been the head of IA, a centrist political party that strives to separate Greenland from Denmark. In the 2009 election, the party gained the most seats. Kleist became the fifth Prime Minister of Greenland in June 2009, according to the Greenlandic parliament. Kleist's campaign was also fruitful, winning 5,461 personal votes relative to just 1,413 for incumbent Prime Minister Hans Enoksen.

Admiral Tim Sloth Jrgensen and General Walter Natynczyk, the head of defense forces for Denmark and Canada respectively, met in late August 2009. Admiral Jrgensen and General Natynczyk were on a tour of Danish and Canadian military bases in the Arctic.
