Kurt Rambis Career

Playing career

Rambis was drafted by the New York Knicks as the 58th pick in the 1980 NBA draft, but the Knicks cut him, then. Kyriakos Rambidis, he played in Greece in the Greek League for Athens' club AEK Athens. He acquired Greek citizenship as a result of Greek descent. In 1981, AEK won the Greek Cup.

In 1981, he was re-signed by the Knicks but never played a single match for them. He began as an NBA player by signing with the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent in 1981. Rambis spent the majority of his 14 seasons in the NBA, winning championships in 1982, 1985, 1989, and 1988 as part of their Showtime teams.

Rambis was a favorite among Lakers fans during his playing days because of his reputation as both a great underdog and best team player. He was praised in Los Angeles for his all-out efforts and willingness to do the "dirty jobs" that few players do not embrace. Rambis wore thick moustache and thick black glasses, prompting Lakers announcer Chick Hearn to call him "Superman" (in reference to Clark Kent's alter ego). A "Superman" fan club (also known as Rambis youth) was formed at the Lakers home arena, where the courtside spectators wore glasses similar to Rambis' ones. Pat Riley, the Lakers' head coach, once yelled at a reporter, "Those guys have sharp Adidas bags." [Rambis]'s got this black satchel, like the kind you'd find in a bowling ball. And it's like vinyl. He never takes a clothes bag or a suitcase. That's all he's got. It could be a week."

Before returning to the Lakers for the 1993–94 season, Rambis played for the Charlotte Hornets, Phoenix Suns, and Sacramento Kings. In 1995, he resigned as a Lakers player.

Coaching career

Rambis began serving as a special assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers in 1994, but the Lakers later returned to the active playing roster in February 1995. He was suspended at the start of the 1995–96 season and then re-signed as an assistant. After coach Del Harris was fired, he served as head coach of the Lakers during the 1999 "lockout season." He had moderate success in the regular season, winning 24-13 before being swept by the San Antonio Spurs in the 1999 Western Conference Semifinals. Rambis served as the Lakers' assistant general manager when Phil Jackson was hired as head coach. He served as an assistant coach under Jackson from 2001 to 2004, assisting the Lakers in the 2002 and the 2004 NBA Finals, with Los Angeles winning the first title in the former series. In 2005, he was hired as an assistant, as well as former NBA Brian Shaw, who helped the Lakers advance to another pair of finals in 2008 and 2009. In the second attempt, the Lakers prevailed.

Rambis was interviewed for the Sacramento Kings' coaching position in 2007. He was a finalist again in 2009 to coach the Kings, and after serious discussions, he was accepted for the position but not for more than two years and more than was promised, so he resigned.

Rambis was named as the Minnesota Timberwolves' new head coach on August 8, 2009, after agreeing to a four-year deal worth $8 million. Kevin McHale, who was infamous for beating him down in Game 4 of the 1984 NBA Finals, was fired by Rambis.

Rambis was fired as head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves on July 12, 2011 after accumulating a 32-132 record in two seasons with the team.

The Lakers reported on July 29, 2013 that they had re-hired Rambis as an assistant coach.

The Knicks reported on July 7, 2014, that Rambis had been hired as the assistant head coach of the team under head coach Derek Fisher. After Fisher was fired on February 8, 2016, Rambis was named interim head coach after Fisher was dismissed. The Knicks recruited Jeff Hornacek as the team's next head coach after going 9-19 under Rambis and finishing the season 32-48 overall, although Rambis retained as associate head coach. Rambis was suspended along with Hornacek on April 12, 2018, who played 60-104 for two seasons with the Knicks.

Executive career

Rambis returned to the Lakers as a senior basketball advisor in September 2018. Since returning to the company in 2017, Rambis has been "one of the company's most influential individuals." Linda Rambis, Kurt Rambis' wife, is the Lakers Executive Director of Special Projects and is one of Jeanie Buss' longest friends. The twosome, as well as Rob Pelinka, have been described as "a pillar of the club's four-pronged brain trust," with [Jeanie] Buss."
