The show's protagonists and their lives are entirely fictional. However, their tale is based on a true story that occurred during the late 1800s and early 1900s, when many young American women, ladening with new money, travelled across the ocean in order to find aristocratic British men to marry. According to History, many American heiresses migrated to Britain between the late nineteenth century and the 1940s, giving their fortune to British aristocrats who possessed fame, class, and titles but who were often short of funds.
