Early life
Turner, the oldest of three children born to a Canadian father of Scottish descent and a Jamaican mother of African and Chinese descent, was born in Edmonton, Alberta. Her mother came from Canada in 1978 with absolutely no money. "She now owns a business engraving shop, and she seems to have done the impossible." Turner performed in her bedroom to the music of jazz musician Oscar Peterson as a youth. Turner has always referred to jazz as a source of inspiration, particularly artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Peggy Lee.
Turner's mother sent her to Jamaica in 2000 to live and experience Jamaican culture. Turner soon discovered that singing is a big part of daily life in Jamaica, especially at the Pentecostal church. Despite her own conviction that she could not sing, her friends convinced her to audition for the youth choir. Turner was accepted into the choir and began performing gospel songs at the Faith Temple Tabernacle in Bayside, Portmore, on the strength of her interpretation of Canada's national anthem. Turner claims this is the time she discovered she loved to sing. Before her high school years in Jamaica, she attended Victoria School of the Arts in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Turner attended Wolmer's Girl School in Kingston, Jamaica, from 2000 to 2002. After returning from Jamaica, which she later graduated from in 2003, she attended Harry Ainlay Composite High School in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Turner emerged as a key player in the underground hip-hop community in 2003, right after graduating from high school. She started seriously looking at her musical career, writing, recording, and performing all her own material. Turner drew immediate attention from her peers, building an underground fan base that attracted a number of industry insiders. Turner appeared on any and every stage she could, winning many championships in the first year, but it wasn't until a few years later that she was a hit.
Turner won a talent competition in Edmonton hosted by local radio station The Bounce (91.7 FM). With the help of her songwriting/production team, Hipjoint Productions, Kreesha's most important to Kreesha's career was winning the competition. Chris Smith, a producer and R&B music executive, and a female entertainer, was stunned by this and led to the start of her mainstream music career.
She signed a record deal with the Capitol Music Group after a fruitful audition with Virgin Records, under which the Virgin imprint operates. EMI Music Canada has also signed her to more effectively tap into the Canadian market.
