Konstantin Scherbakov (11 June 1963 in Barnaul, Siberia, Russian SFSR) is a Russian pianist. * In 1983, he was the champion of the first Rachmaninoff international piano competition. * In 1990, he appeared in four recitals at the Chamber Music Festival in Asolo, beginning his international career. Scherbakov's Piano Concertos, the nine Beethoven symphonies (as transcribed for the piano by Liszt), and music by Tchaikovsky, Medtner, Shostakovich, and Lyapunov are among his albums on Naxos Records; among his CDs on his label are recordings of all Tchaikovsky's Piano Concertos, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concertos, Respighi, * Critical acclaim has been high; Gramophone magazine has said that Scherbakov plays with "delicacy and love," and the German Critics' Circle has twice awarded Scherbakov's top prize, one for a recording of Godowsky's Sonata in E minor and the other for a rare interpretation of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony by Franz Liszt. ClassicsToday.com rated Shostakovich's Twenty-Four Preludes and Fugues as "a triumph" and gave him a classical award at Cannes in 2001. Konstantin Scherbakov has been a professor at the Zurich University of the Arts since 1998. * He is a jury member in international competitions (such as ARD Munich, Busoni in Bolzano, Liszt, and among others Rio de Janeiro, Seoul, Havana, and others). He regularly holds master classes throughout the world (Germany, Italy, Switzerland, New Zealand, Singapore, Cuba, Russia, South Africa, and Brazil). Many of his students earned prizes and awards at international competitions, most recently Yulianna Avdeeva, the 2010 International Chopin Competition champion in Warsaw. Since 1992, Scherbakov and his family have lived in Zurich, Switzerland. * He spends a substantial amount of his time in Spain and Russia.
