Kirk Muller Career

Playing career

Muller began his junior years with the Kingston Canucks of the Ontario Hockey League, but his most fruitful junior seasons were with the Guelph Platers. In 1984, there was a rivalry between the Platers and the Canadian Olympic Team, who wanted Muller to compete with them at the 1984 Winter Olympics. Muller's owner was furious about losing Muller for so long, but the Platters' deal was reached and Muller appeared in the Olympics. In the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, he was drafted second overall by the New Jersey Devils, second behind Mario Lemieux. Capt. Kirk, with his enthusiasm and solid two-way play, was the Devils franchise's heart and soul. However, although New Jersey had a fruitful run in the 1988 playoffs, they never became a top Stanley Cup contender while Muller was with them. On September 20, he was transferred with Roland Melanson to the Montreal Canadiens, along with Tom Chorske and Stephen Hart.

Muller quickly became a fan favorite in Montreal, and he helped them win the Stanley Cup in 1993. During the 1994–95 NHL season, he was traded to the New York Islanders. He was reluctant to report to the Islanders at first, but after team leadership decided that his bad attitude outweighed his potential contributions on the ice and barred him from the team, he was unable to perform. Muller was eventually recalled by the islanders, but he refused to reveal, freeing the Islanders from their contractual obligations to compensate him. Muller was sold at a discount to the Toronto Maple Leafs, allowing Muller and Don Beaupre to the Maple Leafs, Martin Straka, Ken Belanger, and Bryan Berard's rights to Bryan Berard to play for the Islanders, while the Ottawa Senators retained Damian Rhodes and the rights to Wade Redden. Muller had his last 20 goals with the Maple Leafs this season, but the Leafs were traded to prospect Jason Podollan after the Leafs fell out of the playoff picture.

Muller's season was rocky in Florida, scoring just four goals in the entire 1998–99 NHL season. In the middle of the 1999-2000 season, he took his last break when he signed with the Dallas Stars. Despite the fact that his scoring touch had virtually faded, he continued to play a vital role with the Stars for four seasons and was part of the "gruesome old men" line that included Mike Keane and John MacLean. At the end of the 2002–03 season, he retired at the end of the season.

Muller appeared in six NHL All-Star Games (1985, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1993, 1994.)

Coaching career

Muller began his teaching with the Queen's University Golden Gaels in Kingston, New York. Muller's Golden Gaels set an 8-13-1-2 record in the Ontario University Athletics Conference in 2005-06.

Muller also held the position of assistant coach with Team Canada, winning the gold medal at the 2005 Lotto Cup Tournament in Slovakia. He served as an assistant coach to Greg Gilbert at the Under-18 World Championship in March 2006.

When Muller was named assistant coach of the Canadiens on June 20, 2006, he returned to the Canadiens.

Muller had been hired as the head coach of the Milwaukee Admirals, the Nashville Predators, on June 27, 2011. Muller took over for Paul Maurice on November 28, 2011. Muller was suspended of his coaching duties by the Carolina Hurricanes on May 5, 2014. Muller was signed as an assistant coach by the St. Louis Blues on May 13, 2014.

Muller was rehired as an associate coach by the Montreal Canadiens on June 2, 2016.

Muller temporarily suspended head coach Claude Julien, who was hospitalized with chest pains on August 13, 2020.

Muller and head coach Claude Julien were dismissed from the Canadiens on February 24, 2021, and former assistant coach Dominique Ducharme took over as interim head coach.

Kirk Muller, a head coach for the Calgary Flames, was named assistant coach by Darryl Sutter on June 10, 2021.
