Kenya Barris (born August 9, 1974) is an American television writer and producer.
Early life
Barris was born in Inglewood, California, the second of five children. He was named after Kenya due to his father visiting the country. Barris' parents divorced when he was five years old. He is an alumnus of Clark Atlanta University.
Personal life
Barris married anesthesiologist Dr. Rania "Rainbow" Edwards Barris in 1999. They have six children. He filed for divorce from her in 2022—having filed for divorce twice before and then withdrawn those filings.
Career
Barris has produced a number of television shows, including the critically acclaimed Black-ish. In addition, the award-winning series has two spin-offs, Grown-ish and Mixed-ish, as well as a third potential spin-off Old-ish. He wrote for The Game, Girlfriends, and Soul Food. Barris co-designed and produced America's Next Top Model with Tyra Banks. He wrote the film Girls Trip. He co-produced the 2019 film Little and co-wrote the screenplay for the 2019 theatrical release Shaft.
Barris made his acting debut in #BlackAF, a Netflix series he created, co-starring Rashida Jones and Iman Benson. Barris reported in October 2020 that he would write, produce, and direct a biopic about comedian Richard Pryor for MGM. ViacomCBS is currently in the process of negotiating a contract with Khalabo Ink Society. Barris would write and direct a modern adaptation of The Wizard of Oz in August 2022.
