Career

Olin first appeared on television in the late 1970s. In 1983, his first television comedy-drama Bay City Blues was on the short-lived NBC comedy-drama. He appeared on NBC's Hill Street Blues as Detective Harry Garibaldi from 1984 to 1985, and from 1985 to 1986 co-starred on the CBS prime time soap opera Falcon Crest as Father Christopher Rossini. Olin appeared on Murder, She Wrote, and Hotel before being cast as Michael Steadman in ABC drama series Thirtysomething. The series debuted in 1987, earning critical acclaim, raising the bar for realism in the field of prime-time drama. In 1990, Olin was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Drama.

Olin was a key player in the CBS crime drama EZ Streets, which took place in 1996. He appeared in another short-lived CBS series, medical drama L.A. Doctors, from 1998 to 1999. He starred in Nothing But the Truth, 1995, Patricia Wettig, The Advocate's Children (1999), and Evolution's Children (1999). His film credits include appearances in Ghost Story (1981), Queens Logic (1991), and 'Til There Was You (1997).

Olin appeared alongside Patricia Wettig in the ABC drama series Brothers & Sisters from 2007 to 2011. He appeared in the CBS drama series Zoo from 2015 to 2017. Mel Harris, Timothy Busfield, and Patricia Wettig were among ABC's upcoming sequels for Thirtysomething and Olin in 2020.

In the summer of 1990, Olin directed his wife in a performance of "My Mother Said I Never Should" at Vassar College's Powerhouse Theatre. He produced six episodes of Thirtysomething before this. In Pursuit of Honor (1995), Doing Time on Maple Drive (1992), and Phenomenon II (2004). He also created White Fang 2: Myth of the White Wolf (1994) for Buena Vista Pictures. He produced episodes of Doctors, Judging Amy, Felicity, The West Wing, 23 episodes of Alias, 20 episodes of Brothers & Sisters, Sleepy Hollow, and 20 episodes of This Is Us.

Olin was executive producer of a number of television dramas in the 2000s and 2010s. Alias (2001-2006) was the first celebrity to be convicted of ABC action drama Alias (2001-2006). Sally Field starred in ABC family drama Brothers & Sisters, which starred an ensemble cast. Patricia Wettig, his wife, was also a regular cast member. Breaking News (2002), The Mob Doctor (2012-2013), and Sleepy Hollow are among his other credits. This Is Us, NBC's family drama, received three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series Production in 2016.
