Keith Hill Career

Playing career

Hill began his career with Blackburn Rovers before heading to Plymouth Argyle in 1992 in a joint venture with Craig Skinner, with Nicky Marker moving in the opposite direction. Hill spent four years with Plymouth before transferring to Rochdale in 1996. After five years at Spotland, he joined Cheltenham Town, but he only played five games before being forced to return to an academy. He then spent a year with Morecambe, the Football Conference club.

Managerial career

Following Hill's departure from playing, he joined Rochdale's coaching staff, where he spent his time as Director of Youth for the club. Following Steve Parkin's dismissal, Hill was appointed as the caretaker boss on December 17, 2006. Milton Keynes Dons' first match in charge of the team ended in a 2–1 loss, leaving them in the League Two relegation zone. He won by a 4–0 victory over Boston United, which moved them out of the playoff zone, his first victory in his tenure. Rochdale appointed Hill as permanent boss on January 3, 2007, after his second 4–0 victory. Despite being in the bottom three for the majority of the first half of the season, Rochdale finished ninth in ninth place.

He took Rochdale through the 2008 League Two play-off final, where they lost 3–2 to Stockport County after beating Darlington 5–4 on penalties in the semi-finals, in his first full season as Dale coach. Hill defeated Rochdale for the second year in a row, but Gillingham, the eventual winners, defeated them 2–1. After beating Northampton Town 1–0 on April 17, 2010, the next season saw growth, with automatic promotion. However, Rochdale missed out on the League Two title after a season of poor form, finishing third behind Notts County and AFC Bournemouth. The following season, Rochdale finished ninth in League One. The club had reached their highest league finish since the 1969-70 season thanks to the 68 points gained.

On May 20, 2011, Hill was allowed to speak to Barnsley, a Championship club, about their vacant manager's position. "We are optimistic, but we are also content with our jobs here," Rochdale's four days later. Hill changed his mind at the start of June and was appointed Barnsley's manager, with assistant David Flitcroft joining him. Hill mainly signed players from lower divisions with a relatively modest budget. Matt Done and Scott Wiseman were among Barnsley's first signings. Barnsley's first season as manager resulted in the selling of striker Ricardo Vaz Tê and long-term injuries to influential midfielders Jacob Butterfield, Jim O'Brien, and David Perkins in January. Following a loss by Blackburn, Hill was fired by Barnsley on December 29, 2012.

After John Coleman Hill's dismissal, he returned to Rochdale for a second spell on January 22, 2013. Rochdale defeated Cheltenham 2–0 on April 26, 2014, boosting them back to League One.

Hill was appointed as the new boss of Bolton Wanderers' home town team, on August 31, 2019, following Bolton's match against Gillingham. Hill said being the Bolton manager was his "dream job," and that he managed to bring a youth squad together before the transfer deadline expired on September 2, 2019. Hill did not have charge of the EFL Trophy match against Bradford City on September 3rd, as Bolton fought the youth team for the final time, so Hill had Jimmy Phillips instead. This was his first match against Rotherham United on September 14th. Bolton led from a Thibaud Verlinden goal early in the game, but Rotherham retaliated by scoring six goals and lifted the match 6–1. Bolton's third straight league loss by five goals was his third consecutive loss in the league. His first victory came against Bristol Rovers on October 22nd, a 2–0 win. Following relegation to League Two, Bolton Wanderers will not be renewing his deal after being relegated to League Two, it was announced on June 12, 2020.

Hill was appointed manager of Tranmere Rovers in League Two on November 21, 2020. Hill was fired on May 11, 2021, after the team advanced to the play-offs but not until the play-offs were started.

Hill was appointed manager of League Two's bottom side Scunthorpe United on Friday, November 5th. His first match in charge came the following day, when Doncaster Rovers defeated his team in the FA Cup First Round by League One side Doncaster Rovers. Scunthorpe's relegation from the Football League after a 72-year absence, followed a 3–0 loss to Leyton Orient on April 15-2022.

Hill was fired on August 30, 2022, with the club sitting in 23rd place in the National League.
