Mixed martial arts career

For more than thirteen years, Parisyan operated under the Hayastan Grappling System (aka Hayastan Wrestling), a design developed by Gokor Chivichyan and Gene LeBell and others, which incorporates elements of Judo, Sambo, Catch wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, and Freestyle wrestling. Until late 2005, Parisyan continued to train at the Hayastan Academy, under Gokor and Gene. Karo said in an interview that he had returned to the Hayastan Academy in early 2012.

To his credit, Parisyan has six Junior National belts and participated in the Olympic Judo trials a few years ago, ahead of the 2004 games in Athens. He said that going to the Olympics was his dream, and that mixed martial arts was just a means of escaping his boredom. He was contacted by UFC chief during the trials and was invited to compete. He accepted because he needed money. But his ribs needed to be rebuilt after the fight against Dave Strasser, so he decided to put off the trials.

He lost his first battle to Sean Sherk in a controversial decision. In a rematch, Parisyan was unable to come out of his corner, and later revealed he had been suffering from a stomach virus.

On September 23, 2003, Parisyan made his UFC debut, defeating Dave Strasser by kimura. In his upcoming fight, Parisyan defeated Georges St-Pierre and lost by a unanimous decision. During the war, Parisyan attempted two kimuras, but Parisyan was unable to obtain them, but St-Pierre defended both attempts. With St-Pierre, Parisyan became the first fighter to go the distance. He went on to win the WEC welterweight crown after defeating Shonie Carter. He then returned to UFC, where he won consecutive decision victories over Nick Diaz, Chris Lytle, and Matt Serra.

Whereas will face UFC World Champion Matt Hughes, Parisyan's next match was set to take place at UFC 56: Full Force. Parysian, on the other hand, sustained a hamstring injury and was forced to leave. Joe Riggs took his place.

In the first round, he met Nick Thompson at UFC 59 and gained by submission (strikes) and advanced to the second round.

At UFC Fight Night 6, Parisyan then met Diego Sanchez. He was disqualified by a unanimous vote. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the contest was selected as the year's Fight of the Year.

Following Sanchez' loss, the French people won three straight victories over Drew Fickett, Josh Burkman, and Ryo Chonan, all by unanimous vote.

In the second round, Parisyan lost via TKO to Thiago Alves at UFC Fight Night 13. Alves put on a good fight against Parisyan's frenzing defense, and then ended their Parisyan with a knee injury and a strike.

At UFC 88: Breakthrough, Parisyan was supposed to face Yoshiyuki Yoshida, but a back injury forced him to cancel right away from the match right before the weigh-ins.

After recovering from his back surgery, Parisyan returned to UFC 94 in Las Vegas against Dong Hyun Kim on January 31, 2009. In a contentious split decision, Parisyan defeated Kim. Following the war, Parisyan tested positive for banned painkillers hydrocodone, hydromorphone, and oxymorphone. Due to a severe back/ hamstring injury, Parisyan has said he has a prescription for the drugs. In mid-March, Parisyan's ban was pending a complete hearing. The NSAC banned Parisyan for nine months on March 17, 2009, ruling his decision was a "no contest."

On October 19, Parisyan had been supposed to face Dustin Hazelett at UFC 106, but the team had to cancel the match the day before weigh-ins. On Twitter, UFC President Dana White said that Parisyan would not be fighting Saturday or ever again in the UFC. White also said he had "a laundry list of excuses." Parisyan's longtime friend and training partner, Neil Melanson, revealed to MMA news site Five Ounces Of Pain that Parisyan is fighting an addiction to painkillers dating back to an injury while training for a fight.

Parisyan entered negotiations with Strikeforce in the hopes of extending his mixed martial arts career in the United States, but it was unsuccessful.

Impact FC 1's return to Parisyan took place on July 10, 2010. He had intended to meet Luis Dutra Jr., but Dutra would be forced off the field with a torn bicep. Ben Mortimer, Parisyan's new adversary, was defeated by a rear-naked choke at 4:18 of the second round.

Karo will be returning to the UFC on September 2, 2010. In November, Dennis Hallman met Hallman at UFC 123. In the first round, Hallman defeated Parisyan via TKO due to punches at 1:47. Following UFC 123, UFC President Dana White said he believes that Parisyan is involved in the UFC.

In the MMA Live 1 show in London, Ontario, Canada, Karo defeated highly acclaimed Canadian prospect Ryan Ford on May 19, 2011. He was able to neutralize Ford's strength and vigor by using his takedowns as it appeared that the first and second rounds were in favor of Parisyan, but he was forced to forfeit the third round due to a surgeon's suspension.

On September 14, Parisyan defeated Jordan Smith in Brazil's Amazon Forest Battle 1. After a long fight that was winding, Parisyan came up short, losing by a split decision.

He had been supposed to face Dave Menne on March 31, 2012, but Menne was forced to leave the match due to a injuries. Rather, Parisyan defeated Thomas Denny. He won by a unanimous vote.

On June 16, 2012, Parisyan was scheduled to face Shamar Bailey in the main event of ShoFIGHT 20 in Springfield, Missouri, for the vacant welterweight title. Bailey was forced off the field due to an injury and was replaced by fellow UFC veteran John Gunderson. After being stunned by Gunderson's knee, which resulted in a fractured cheek bone, Parisyan was trapped in a guillotine choke and lost the game by submission. After the confrontation, Parisyan said he was picked due to the strain on his cheekbone and that he wasn't being choked.

On October 6, 2012, Parisyan was supposed to face David Bielkheden in Malmo, Sweden, but the pair was called out due to personal circumstances and was replaced by Marcus Davis. At the time, Parisyan said: "Everyone knows that the last couple years have been a bumpy ride for me." I've tried to refocus myself and get back to throwing people on their heads, but it hasn't been the same. Not to take anything away from my opponent, but to me, my last fight was brutal. My boss and I had a long chat, and he brought me a sports psychologist. At this point, I need to listen to my doctor and refocus on my personal life, not fighting. If God willing, fighting will return to my life at some point in my life, but for the time being, I must concentrate on Karo getting back to Karo."

On September 29, 2012 at a Gladiator Challenge tournament, Parisyan defeated Tiger Bonds by a first round armbar.

On October 28, 2012, Parisyan defeated Edward Darby in the first round armbar and won via first round armbar.

At Bellator 95, Parisyan's first Bellator match was against fellow judoka Rick Hawn. Both Parisyan and Hawn had competed in judo tournaments before, with Hawn winning both their matches at the Judo U.S. Open. In the second round of the Bellator fight, Parisyan lost via TKO in the second round.

At Bellator 106, Parisyan was supposed to face Fight Master Cristiano Souza but had to cancel due to injury.

On April 11, 2014, Parisyan faced Ron Keslar at Bellator 116. He won the second round by knockout, giving him his first KO victory of his MMA career.

On July 25, 2014, Parisyan faced Bellator newcomer and former sparring partner Phil Baroni. In the first round, he defeated TKO in the first round.

On October 3, 2014, Parisyan was supposed to meet Marius aromskis at Bellator 127. However, aromskis was suspended from the match to face someone else on a later date. Fernando Gonzalez stepped in as a replacement. In the first round, Parisyan lost via TKO. Gonzalez, on the other hand, failed a drug test and was subsequently fined and suspended for one month.
