Karen Kingsbury is the oldest of five children born to Ted and Anne Kingsbury. Because of her father's work with IBM, she and her family stayed in the San Fernando Valley until Karen was ten years old (relocating from Michigan).
In 1986, she received a bachelor's degree in journalism from California State University Northridge. After graduating, she worked with the Los Angeles Times as a sports writer and also covered the crime beat. On the 1985 episode of the $25,000 Pyramid, she lost.
