Career
Kang Ho-dong graduated from Masan Business High School. He began participating in professional Ssireum (Korean wrestling) matches after graduating from high school. He lost numerous matches early in his wrestling career. However, Kang, the unseeded, 1989, defeated the legendary Lee Mangi at the 44th national ssireum championships, winning the tournament, which marked the start of his fruitful Ssireum career. He was nicknamed 'Devil on the Sand' for his arrogant and fearless demeanor, and he went on to win the Baekdujen Championship seven times and five times, as well as the Cheonhajangsa Ssireum Championship. He was widely regarded as the youngest ever Cheonhajangsa holder.
After Kang retired from wrestling, he began his MC and comedian careers in 1993, debuting on MBC as a natural performer. He was inspired by Lee Kyung-kyu, South Korea's most popular MC and comedian. He later became the host of a number of popular variety shows, including X-Man, Love Letter, and Ya Shim Man Man Man. Kang has received numerous awards for his work as one of the best television hosts in Korean television history, and he is widely known as one of the top television presenters in the world. He hosted four famous variety shows in 2011: Happy Sunday - 2 Days & 1 Night, Golden Fishery, Star King, and Strong Heart.
Kang Ho Dong was the first person to win the TV category Daesang (Grand Prize) as a comedian in 2008, the 44th Baeksang Arts Awards. The Daesang has only been awarded to television actors/actresses ever since its inception, and Kang was the first one to break with this tradition.
Kang announced his resignation from the entertainment industry due to the tax evasion controversy and the National Tax Service's investigation, which culminated on September 9, 2011. Kang Ho Dong was charged with tax evasion. He was initially suspended due to a discrepancy in his numbers, but there were no formal charges or procedures against the multi-entertainer. "In the case of the fine being less than $500,000 USD (per year), the National Tax Service must file a charge of tax evasion in order for the subject to be a suspect of tax evasion." However, there has been no such charge up to date, so we've opted not to bring the lawsuit as of the 16th." Kang Ho Dong's fine has risen to $700,000 USD for a total three years, much less than the mandatory $500,000 USD per year. "Kang Ho Dong's annual fine is less than the minimum $500,000 USD," the National Tax Service said. In addition, he did not commit acts of deliberate evasion. It's just a mistake made on behalf of his accountant, so we will not be charging him with tax evasion.
Kang also signed an exclusive deal with SM C&C on August 17, 2012. When Kang was fired along with fellow MC Shin Dong-yup SM Entertainment and made a comeback, CEO Lee Soo-man convinced him personally.
Kang had a rough time after returning to work. Many shows in three major public radio stations were cancelled due to poor ratings. However, Kang also hosted a number of new variety shows in cable television, including Know Bros, Let's Eat Dinner Together in JTBC and New Journey to the West series in tvN, beginning at the end of 2015. All of these services have received a lot of positive feedback and high ratings. Kang's Kitchen, a spin-off service due to the success of the program New Journey to the west, was introduced. As a result, Kang slowly regained his fame and re-established his status as a National MC.
