Julio Adrián Lojo Bocca (born March 6, 1967), also known as Julio Bocca, is an Argentine ballet dancer.

Bocca spent 20 years as a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre and is now the artistic director of Ballet Nacional Sodre, Uruguay's national ballet.

Bocca has been described as one of Argentina's most well-known dancers of all time.

Early life and career

He began ballet lessons at the age of four and then enrolled in the National School of Dance at the age of seven, progressing to the Teatro Colón's Advanced Arts Institute a year later. His mother, a dance teacher, encouraged his education.

In 1981, Bocca first appeared at the Colón Theatre with the Chamber Ballet Company. He began performing as a soloist in a Danish choreographer Flemming Flindt's production a year ago. He earned the gold medal at the International Ballet Competition in Moscow in 1985 and was invited to attend the American Ballet Theatre by Mikhail Baryshnikov, the youngest principal dancer ever hired. Despite the fact that Bocca was a principal dancer, he was allowed to appear regularly as a guest artist with other companies. The New York Times named him Dancer of the Year in 1987.

Bocca has appeared with companies such as La Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera, the Kirov of Saint Petersburg, the Royal Danish Ballet, the Cuban National Ballet, and the Bolshoi Ballet have all performed with the Bolshoi Ballet. A reviewer with Dance Magazine raved about "his irresistible blend of passion and gallantry" after a London performance by the Royal Ballet.

Bocca made a name for himself in Argentina, with his performances regularly packed up soccer stadiums.

He founded Ballet Argentino, a nationwide ballet company that appears regularly in theaters. Bocca collaborates with Eleonora Cassano, an Argentine dancer. Luciana Paris, from 1997 to 2001 Bocca's dance partner with the Ballet Argentino. Julio Bocca performed in the international Millennium Day festival in Ushuaia, dancing with Cassano and the Ballet Argentino in a show that was broadcast to the entire world.

Julio Bocca has also combined ballet dancing with tango, a trend that has been well-received by the public. He appeared in the film Tango, no me dejes nunca (in English: Tango), which gained him a new following. He has performed with tango choreographer Ana Maria Stekelman on several occasions. Bocca's ballet Argentino also includes contemporary, jazz, ballroom, and modern dance styles.

He appeared in Fosse, a Broadway musical showcasing choreographer Bob Fosse's work in 2000.

On June 22, 2006 and 23, Bocca performed his farewell with ballerina Ferri in the American Ballet Theatre's production of Manon. He continued to perform with his Ballet Argentino until he resigned from dancing at the end of 2007.

In March 2010, Uruguay's president José Mujica appointed him as the head of Ballet Nacional SODRE.

Bocca was president of the jury at the Prix de Lausanne ballet competition in 2016.
