Early life
Strain was born in Concord, California. She was a student at Diablo Valley College and had a long academic history. She migrated to Las Vegas and then Hollywood, California, later in life.
Personal life and death
Strain was 6 foot 1 in (1.85 meters) tall. Kevin Eastman, a co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, was married from 1995 to 2006. He appeared in several of her films, including Day of the Warrior and L.E.T.A.L.A.L. Ladies: Savage Beach is back.
Following a head injury in her 20s, a large portion of her youth was erased from her memory by retrograde amnesia. Dave Gram, her boyfriend, revealed in November 2018 that she was in the late stages of dementia, owing to her fall, and that she was receiving hospice care at home.
Malibu Bay Films, a studio that Strain frequently worked with, incorrectly announced that she had died in January 2020, but then retracted their statement after the mistake was discovered. Strain died on January 10, 2021, at the age of 58, one year later.

Strain was dubbed the "Queen of B-movies" due to her over 100 films to her credit. Simon Bisley, Milo Manara, and Kevin Eastman, who would later marry, modelled for many comic book artists, including Simon Bisley, Milo Manara, and Kevin Eastman. Her likeness was also used in animation. She was the voice for the main character in the animated film Heavy Metal 2000, and she was the basis for the third-person shooter video game Heavy Metal: F.A.K. 2. She appeared on panels at San Diego Comic-Con and was a regular guest panelist.
Heavy Metal's autobiography, Six Foot One and Worth the Climb, was published in 1997 (ISBN 1-8829-3133-5). It was heavily illustrated with stills from her film and modeling career, as well as several paintings by Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, and Olivia De Berardinis.
