www.dailymail.co.uk, April 30, 2024
Reader's Digest has been forced to close its door after 86 years in operations, due to ongoing 'financial pressures'. Eva Mackevic, the current editor-in-chief, heart wrenchingly made the announcement on LinkedIn yesterday evening that the British edition has 'come to an end' due to the 'unforgiving magazine publishing landscape'. The iconic magazine, which amassed interviews with world leaders, acting legends and music icons in its almost 1,200 issues, will 'cease trading immediately'. She wrote: 'Unfortunately, the company just couldn't withstand the financial pressures of today's unforgiving magazine publishing landscape and has ceased to trade.'

It's farewell to Reader's Digest as British edition of iconic magazine closes down after 86 years due to 'financial pressures': Editor-in-chief shares touching tribute

The title, which in its heyday in the 1950s took on the tobacco companies about the links between smoking and lung cancer, has now ceased to trade in Britain. In an honest and heartfelt tribute, the iconic magazine's editor-in-chief Eva Mackevic said 'the company just couldn't withstand the financial pressures of today's unforgiving magazine publishing landscape'. The closure comes 14 years after it fell into administration because of a £125m pension fund deficit. The struggling magazine was rescued by Better Captiol before it was sold again in 2014 to venture capitalist Mike Luckwell, who made millions from the TV company behind Bob the Builder.

EMMA COWING: The sweet scents of nostalgia, White Musk and Kiwi, are among the nostalgic scents of nostalgia

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 16, 2024
I was a White Musket. Not that I was terribly irritable. I liberally applied - or, more accurately, doused myself in - them all. We were all at it in the early Nineties. Every class in my Glasgow girls' school smelt - no, reeked - of The Body Shop.

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Queen Camilla's Shakespeare anniversary shindig with 11 actresses, including Judi Dench and Joanna Lumley, is likely to have been King Charles's idea

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 15, 2024
The King's wish was for the Shakespeare anniversary shindig, with Queen Camilla posing with 11 actors. Despite appearing in Macbeth at the age of 17, he is a huge fan of all things Shakespeare. His father said, 'Funniest thing I've ever seen.' Charles' other stage passion was for radio comedy The Goon Show. He loved doing some of their Dadaesque skits. During a Clarence House lunch, the Queen Mother's overlong interpretation of their Ying Tong song prompted him to throw a mango at him. He's probably glad he was spared from the big luvvie photocall.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph, an Oscar winner, is defying Hollywood's obsession with women who are both white and thin

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 21, 2024
Da'Vine Joy Randolph, a vivacious curvy, has made no apology that her big Hollywood break took years because she does not fit the mould of what a leading lady should look like. People on screen don't necessarily look like me,' she says. I've had to fight to bring fully developed characters with complexities.' She was asked which actors she admired when applying for drama school. The interviewer told Meryl Staep, Judi Dench, and Cate Blanchett: "I must make you aware that the people you gave are 60-year-old white people, one from the United Kingdom." But when this year's Oscar nominations are revealed on Tuesday, she is expected to be the naysayers wrong, as the 37-year-old is a shoe-in for the Best Supporting Actress category. She has already won a Golden Globe and is a favorite for a Bafta and an Academy Award for her role as a bereaved cook in The Holdovers.

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 22, 2023

The actress, who was 88, confessed to slipping into the bathtub when her daughter, Finty Williams, called her and begged her to wish actor Chris Logan a happy birthday. 'Bone, James Bone': Meet the ordinary moms and dads who scaled cranes and dads who dangled from cable cars in James Bond's'most jaw-dropping competition to date.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 17, 2023
Bone is a form of satisfaction; James Bone is the author. 'When I was on the roof of the cable car in Rio, I was on top of it.' He never quite finishes his story, but his older brother Joey, a 43-year-old electrician and black cab driver, has his own series of tall tales about snakes that could engulf humans in seconds, deep sea dives, hairy moments on speedboats, and Aston Martins. Each tale is more far-fetched - and more far-flung - than the previous, and most likely would suspect they'd been indulging in too many vodka martinis (shaken, not stirred). And yet, they are absolutely true. The Bone brothers are two of the 18 contestants who spent the money on a year filming a new Bond-themed TV show that has been described as the biggest and blingiest contest ever held. It's difficult to decide what kind of entertainment extravaganza 007 is. The Road to a Million is quite long.

ANGELA MOLLARD wrote that Diana's death was the most frightening period of our teenage lives. I can't bear to be transported back to all the rage and rage generated by The Crown even now. And I know I'm not alone

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 13, 2023
I adore The Crown. I adore everything about it. The polished gallop through royal history, the inspired casting of Vanessa Kirby as Prince Margaret and Matt Smith, as well as creator Peter Morgan's ability to bring a living, breathing family, and packaging them as characters in a modern and thrilling soap opera. And yet, here we are at the start of the sixth and final season of the award-winning series, and I can't believe it.

Given her 66-year career, Dame Judi Dench is no stranger to the bizarre wig, but this one may be her best yet

To us, this may seem strange, but Judi says her family has a tradition of making clothing out of box. Judi attended the Barbican Hall to promote her latest book, Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays The Rent Judi said: 'That packing stuff holds its shape rather well.' Brendan O'Hea, a friend and co-author, commented, 'Your grandson Sammy calls you the most childish person he knows.'

Guess who's coming to dinner? One A-lister smoked all the way through MARY MCCARTNEY's dinner, and another made a monumental faux pas. The daughter of Paul reveals the secrets of cooking for the A list

Feeding Creativity is McCartney's third book of vegetarian recipes; she and her fashion designer sister Stella co-created one; Vegetarianism used to be the favored cause of cranks and sandal-wearing lefties, but it has long since gone mainstream, and veggie cookbooks have topped the bestseller list.

After witnessing it, Crown's creator Peter Morgan claims Judi Dench and John Major are "probably feel stupid" for speaking out against the hit drama

Inset: John Major, who described one storyline as a "bar load of harmful nonsense." Right: Princess Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, is expected to return as a ghost in the forthcoming series.

A Midsummer Night's Dream? They're at it like knives. Macbeth's real problem? His wife will not sleep with him. Antony and Cleopatra? After a fight, sex was much better... JUDI DENCH's JUDI DENCH's very saucy guide to Shakespeare was more effective

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 19, 2023
Those who flocked to Shakespeare left Shakespeare at school, claiming that the performances were outdated and unintelligible, will now have to think again. The Bard wasn't cerebral or academic, according to Dame Judi Dench in her latest book, which swirls and dances with humor and mischief - he was saucier than Confessions Of A Window Cleaner. Judi speaks of Falstaff and the History Plays. "All sorts of things were going on in the Boar's Head Tavern's dark corners.' In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Oberon and Titania are so randy. They're all at it for knives; all the fairies should be huming each other throughout.' Antony and Cleopatra 'just carouse and have sex and drink all night.' The sex will unquestionably be even better after a quabble,' according to the author.' Hamlet's mother, Gertrude, "wanted to get back to the bedroom." She's'very much' enjoying being carried along by this regal lady, who has a good deal of rumpy-pumpy' with Claudius, her brother-in-law, and the usurping new Danish king. 'Maybe there were issues with Hamlet's father,' Judi conjectures. 'Maybe he couldn't't, you know, get it up.'
