Personal life
During the filming of his film "Podemos Hacernos Dao," Juanes met model/actress Karen Martnez. They were married on August 6, 2004. The couple broke up in May 2007 after three years of marriage due to unresolved differences, but they reconciled four months later. They have three children together, two daughters, Luna Aristizábal Martnez (born 6 September 2005), Paloma Aristizábal Martnez (born 2 June 2005), and one son, Dante Aristizábal Martez (born 12 September 2009). Juanes is a vegetarian who lives in Key Biscayne, Florida.
Early life and career
Juanes was born in Antioquia, Colombia, del Prncipe. His father and brothers began to instruct him how to play guitar when he was seven years old. His passion for the instrument led him to discover simple genres of music, such as tango and Vallenato, as well as Russian folk music.
He grew up in Medelln during the reign of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who was the city had the world's highest murder rate. Juanes lived through a civil war in which hundreds of people were killed during his childhood. Abducted cousins were murdered by kidnappers, and gunmen shot and killed a close friend. His father died of cancer, contributing to Juane's grief and sperm. "Colombia has suffered so much that the only way to move forward is to imagine a better world," Juanes said.
Juanes, as a youth, was heavily influenced by rock and metal bands like The Beatles and Metallica. He formed Ekhymosis in 1988, and the band's debut album, Nio Gigante, was released the same year. During its career, the band recorded seven studio albums and performed on the stage with artists including Alejandro Sanz, Aterciopelados, and Ricky Martin; however, the band "couldn't get out of Colombia" and remained "very local and limited to the Colombian market," in Juanes' words. Juanes disbanded the company in 1998 so that he could pursue a solo career.
Solo career
Juanes' solo debut Fjate Bien (Take a Good Look), produced by Gustavo Santaolalla in 2000. The album did well in Colombia, spending ten weeks at the top of the charts, but other countries were unsuccessful. Juanes performed at the award show, earning him three Latin Grammy nominations for Best New Artist, Best Rock Solo Vocal Album, and Best Rock Song on the album. Juanes performed demos for over forty new songs in Santaolalla's studio later that night, preparing on another album.
Un D'a Normal (A Normal Day), Gustavo Santaolalla's first solo album, was released in 2002 and was extremely popular in America. During its first day of sales, the album was rated gold in Colombia and multi-platinum in countries including Colombia, Mexico, and Spain. The album spent 92 weeks in Billboard's Top Albums chart, a new record, and two years on the chart. The album was released after the 2002 Latin Grammy Awards' eligibility deadlines were met, but the lead single, "A Dios Le Pido" ("To God I Pray"), was nominated for three awards and named Best Rock Song.
On the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks, "A Dios le Pido" topped the singles charts of twelve countries and lasted 47 weeks in a row. "Fotografa" ("Photograph"), a duet with Portuguese pop singer Nelly Furtado about the loneliness between lovers, was also included on the album. Juanes later worked with Furtado on a remix of "Powerless (Say What You Want)," her 2003 album Folklore's lead single, and "Te busqué" ("I Looked for You"), a single from her 2006 album Loose. Juanes received the most coveted prizes at the 2003 Latin Grammy Awards, where he received each of the five awards for which he had been nominated, including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year.
Mi Sangre (My Blood) was released in September 2004 and debuted on the Billboard Top Latin Albums, ranking one. The album released three consecutive number one singles, which remained at number one for a total of six months. "La Camisa Negra" ("The Black Shirt"), the album's third single, was released in Italy in support of neo-fascism by comparing it to the uniform worn under Benito Mussolini's reign. In reaction, left-wing media company Indymedia called for a ban on the music. "La Camisa Negra" has nothing to do with fascism or Mussolini, Juanes later said. Juanes also received three new accolades for his nine previous Grammy nominations at the 2005 Latin Grammy Awards. He received the award for Best Rock Song for "Nada Sin Tu Amor" ("I am Worthless Without Your Love"), Best Rock Solo Album for Mi Sangre," "To See You Again"), and Best Music Video for "Volverte a Ver." Juanes performed "La camisa negra" at an international gala in Germany on December 9, 2005, in honor of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Final Draw evening. Juanes began a year-long sabbatical in June 2006 to spend time with his wife, model Karen Martnez, and their two children Luna and Paloma. He was working on an album that was released on October 23, 2007. When asked about the possibility of recording an album in English, Juanes replied, "singing in Spanish is very important because it's the language in which I think and feel." I admire people who sing in English, but for the time being, I'll keep my Spanish." Juanes planned to debut 4J, his own music label, in October 2007, which will be released by the Universal Music Group. La Vida... Juanes released Más futuro pasado in December 2019.
