Joyce Hatto Life

Joyce Hilda Hatto, born in 1928, was an English concert pianist and piano teacher.

In 1956, she married William Barrington-Coupe, a recording producer who was found guilty of Purchase Tax evasion in 1966.

Hatto became well-known very late in life when unauthorised copies of commercial recordings made by other pianists were released under her name, earning her high praise from critics.

The fraud didn't emerge until 2007, more than six months after her death.

Joyce Hatto Career

Early life and early career

Joyce Hatto was born in St John's Wood, London, England. Her father, an antique dealer and piano enthusiast, was an avid pianist and piano enthusiast. She appeared at a considerable number of concerts in London, as well as throughout Britain and Europe, beginning in the 1950s. There were concertos in which she was accompanied by the Boyd Neel, Haydn, and London Symphony Orchestras, as well as others; solo recitals at the Wigmore Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and elsewhere; and performances by "pupils of Joyce Hatto" in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She supplemented her income by teaching the London Philharmonic Choir under conductors such as Thomas Beecham and Victor de Sabata, as well as a piano tutor at Crofton Grange, a girls' boarding school in Hertfordshire, where her students included novelist Rose Tremain. She worked in recording studios for many companies, including Saga Records in England, as well as others in Hamburg and Paris.
