Jourdan Lewis Career

College career

Lewis received a football scholarship from the University of Michigan. He played in 13 games as a rookie, with 17 tackles and two passes defensed.

He appeared in 12 games (seven starts), including 39 tackles, 28 solo tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and six passes defensed. In the third game of the season, he was named a starter.

He played 13 games as a freshman, with 52 tackles (3.5 for loss), two interceptions, and 20 passes defensed (ranked third in the FBS). On kickoff returns, he had averaging of 25.2 yards.

He missed the first three games due to back, hamstring, and quad injuries as a senior. Lewis had 20 pass breakups in the first ten games of the 2015 season, a new school record. With 21 passes defended, he came in second place among all players in the NCAA Division I FBS. Lewis broke records with 21 pass breakups in 2015, beating the previous record of 18 held by Marlin Jackson (2002) and Leon Hall (2006). Lewis was invited to the All-Big Ten defensive first-team by both the media and coaches following the 2015 season. He was also named a first-team All-American by USA Today and Sports Illustrated, becoming the first Wolverine to be honoured since Taylor Lewan in 2013 and the first Wolverine defensive back to be honoured since Leon Hall in 2006.

Lewis was targeted 31 times during the 2016 season, total yards after catch and 0.36 yards per snap in coverage. Lewis has played 23 tackles, 3.5 tackles-for-loss, two interceptions, and 12 pass breakups this season. Lewis was named the Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year by both the media and coaches, and he was first selected to the All-Big Ten defensive first-team following the 2016 season. The Walter Camp Football Foundation, Associated Press, Sporting News, and Sports Illustrated had him named him as a first-team All-American.

Professional career

Lewis, and colleagues Chris Wormley and Ben Gedeon had all accepted their invitations to attend the 2017 Senior Bowl on January 10, 2017. He made four combined tackles and had a strong coverage under Chicago Bears head coach John Fox as a member of the North team, losing 16-15 to the South on January 28, 2017. Lewis was invited to the NFL combine as a top-ten cornerback. He attended and completed the majority of drills, but opted to skip the short shuttle and three-cone drills. On March 18, he decided to attend Michigan's Pro Day. Lewis opted for a 40-yard dash (4.47), 20-yard dash (1.59), short shuttle (4.38), and a three-cone drill (6.88) for representatives and scouts from all 32 NFL clubs. Lewis' mother accused him of dragging her across the floor and putting his hands around her neck, but Lewis denied it, saying he didn't touch her. He pleaded not guilty, but it was likely to influence his draft stock. Lewis' draft estimates varied from the second or third round to as low as the sixth or seventh round, mainly due to his misdemeanor domestic violence charges. (Lewis was later found not guilty.) NFL analyst Mel Kiper Jr. ranked him as the sixth best cornerback prospect in the draft by NFLDraftScout.com.

Lewis was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round (92nd overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft. He was the 14th cornerback pick in 2017. Lewis was signed by the Dallas Cowboys to a four-year, $3.24 million contract, which also includes a signing bonus of $753,428.

He had been scheduled to compete with Orlando Scandrick, Chidobe Awuzie, Anthony Brown, and Nolan Carroll for a career as the starting pointback, but he sustained a hamstring injury during his first training camp session and missed all of the preseason.

Lewis made his professional regular season debut against the Denver Broncos on September 17, after being a healthy scratch for their season-opener. Carroll played his first game after suffering a concussion and intercepted six solo tackles and intercepted his first pass of his career off of Bronco quarterback Trevor Siemian in a 42-17 loss. In a 28–17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, he made his first appearance in his place of Carroll, had six solo tackles, deflected a pass, earning his first career start in place of Carroll. He sustained a hamstring injury during the game and was questionable going into the following week.

In the Cowboys' 35-31 loss, he made his second appearance in his career debut and collected seven combined tackles and a season-high three pass deflections. Lewis converted an 11-yard game-winning touchdown with 11 seconds remaining in the game to Davante Adams due to Aaron Rodgers' back shoulder fade. Lewis was mocked by FS1 analyst Skip Bayless, who attributed the touchdown to the height difference between Adams (6'2") and Lewis (5'10"). Lewis Carroll was recalled by the Cowboys on October 8, making Lewis Lewis the starting right cornerback due to his appearances.

Lewis ended the 2018 season with 12 combined tackles, one intercept, one pass defense, and two fumble recoveries in 15 games.

Lewis scored an interception off Sam Darnold in week 6 against the New York Jets, defeating him 24–22. Lewis recovered a fumble caused by teammate Dorance Armstrong on Daniel Jones in week 9 and returned it for a 63 yard touchdown. Lewis had a toe tapping interception against the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football against Mitch Trubisky at the one yard line during their 31–24 loss.

Lewis lost 41–33 on Week 15 against the San Francisco 49ers for his first dismissal of the season.

Lewis signed a three-year contract extension with the Cowboys on March 17, 2021. Lewis had three interceptions, 61 total tackles, and 88 interceptions yards in his career.

Lewis sustained a Lisfranc injury in Week 7 and was put on injured reserve on October 26, 2022.
