Joshua Michael Thomas (born 26 May 1987) is an Australian comedian, actor, and writer based in Melbourne.

In 2005, he won the Melbourne International Comedy Festival's Raw Comedy Competition.

He has since appeared on television regularly, including as a regular and Generation Y team captain on Network Ten's 'Bout Your Generation.'

Thomas co-wrote and starred in the award-winning ABC2 and Pivot television series Please Like Me in 2013.

Early life

Thomas was born in Blackwater, Queensland, and the son of Rebecca and Mike Thomas. He attended Kenmore State High School in Chapel Hill and Westlake in Brisbane's western suburbs, graduating in 2004. He enrolled in a Bachelor of Creative Industries, majoring in Television at the Queensland University of Technology, but after one year, he dropped out.

Personal life

He is openly gay. At the age of 28, Thomas was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In 2021, he revealed that he is also autistic.

Career

He received the RAW Comedy Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2005. At the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, he was in the finals of So You Think You're Funny. He was selected to appear in The Comedy Zone, a showcase of Australia's most promising up-and-coming comedians hosted by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival the following year.

"Please Like Me," Thomas' first solo performance, debuted at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2007, where it received the Melbourne Airport Award for Best Newcomer. His live shows have performed both nationally and internationally, including in Edinburgh and Montreal's comedy festivals. Thomas performed "Surprise" on the Adelaide Fringe, Brisbane Comedy Festival, and Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2010.

He appeared at Everything Ever at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2011 as well as other venues.

Thomas has a podcast named Josh Thomas and Friend, which includes Thomas and his comedian pals Mel Buttle and Tom Ward. On iTunes, a second series of the podcast was released in November 2009, but the first series was cancelled. In 2011, the third series was released, but the second series was also cancelled.

Thomas became a regular and Generation Y team captain on Network Ten's 'Bout Your Generation,' in 2009. He also competed in Celebrity MasterChef Australia, but he lost in the first heat to Kirk Pengilly of INXS.

The television show Please Like Me, written by Thomas Thomas, premiered on ABC2. After premiering the first episode online, Participant Media's television network Pivot purchased the series for the United States and premiered all six episodes as a binge marathon on August 1, 2013. Thomas' first six-part series is based on his stand-up comedy shows and portrays him as himself.

The series was nominated for an International Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series in 2014. Thomas has received various accolades for his work on the series, including an AACTA Award for Best Television Screenplay in 2015. It was shortlisted for the Betty Roland Prize for scriptwriting, New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards, in 2015.

Thomas produced Everything's Gonna Be Okay, a television comedy starring a single man (played by himself) in his twenties and staying in the United States after his father's death, in order to care for his teenage half-sisters. Freeform had the show ordered a pilot order and it was picked up to series. Thomas appeared, wrote, and appeared as the showrunner in January 2020's premiere.
