Josh Kelly Career

Professional career

Kelly's first fight as a professional was a six-round victory (59-55) over Jay Byrne (4-1) of Dublin, who had been in the Olympics on the undercard of Ricky Burns vs. Julius Indongo.

Kelly defeated Jony Vila (6-1) of Spain and Gateshead's Tom Whitfield (4-1) in the fourth round, a tie after each in the first round. In May, the Vila fight took place at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, Birmingham, although the Whitfield match took place at the Walker Activity Dome in Newcastle, with his battle being the main event.

Kelly ended the year with a record of 5-0 after victories over Mexico's Jose Luis Zuniga (13-2-3), and France's Jean Michel Hamilcaro (25-8-3), who were defeated by second-round stoppage and sixth-round stoppage respectively in October and December. These fights took place at the SSE Arena in Belfast and London's York Hall.

Kelly defeated Ray Robinson, who was ranked No.3 in the WBC and #15 by the WBO at welterweight, on June 1, 2019. Kelly was ranked #9 by the WBA at welterweight. The game was still tense and ended in a majority draw, with one scorecard going in favour of Kelly, 96-94, while the other two read 95-95 twice.

Kelly defeated Wiston Campos in his nascent war. Kelly was struggling with Campos at times, but ultimately won the match by unanimous vote, scoring 99-90, 99-90, and 98-91 on the scorecards.

Kelly defeated top welterweight David Avanesyan, who was ranked #6 by the IBF, #7 by the WBA, #9 by the WBA, and #10 by the WBO at the time, in his next fight. Avanesyan proved to be the best man on the night, finishing Kelly within six rounds.

Six GWS players receive bans and seven others are fined over 'completely unacceptable' 'Wacky Wednesday' antics, as AFL reveal controversial costumes

GWS Giants confirmed that Josh Fahey has been handed a four-match suspension by the AFL for a costume he wore at the club's end-of-season function and for his involvement in a skit performed at the event.  It comes as five other players were issued lesser suspensions after reports emerged this week that the AFL were investigating the club's 'Wacky Wednesday' party that had the theme 'controversial couples'.  Reports had claimed that several of the players had donned distasteful outfits while some had also performed some 'unsavoury skits'.

Several GWS Giants players are reportedly set to be hit with suspensions and heavy fines for offensive costumes and skits at the club's post-season party - and AFL supporters are up in arms about the reported punishment for Toby Greene (left), who dressed up as breakdancer Raygun (top right).

One of the AFL's biggest stars is named in scandalous Wacky Wednesday party as extraordinary new details emerge about what really unfolded

One of the AFL's biggest stars has landed himself in hot water after it was revealed that multiple GWS Giants players are facing suspensions or hefty fines following a fancy dress post-season function. News broke on Tuesday that the AFL were conducting an investigation into the incident after an anonymous complaint was made about the 'Wacky Wednesday' 'troubled couples'-themed party outfits. The event had been held at a private room in a pub and had seen players from the team perform 'unsavoury skits', which had included a blow-up doll, according to The Age.
