Josephine Pinckney Life

Josephine Lyons Pinckney (January 25, 1895-October 4, 1957) was a novelist and poet in the American South's literary revival after World War II. Three O'clock Dinner (1945), her first best-selling book, was the social comedy.

Early life

Josephine Pinckney was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on January 25, 1895, to Thomas Pinkney and Camilla Scott. She went to Ashley Hall and began a literary journal there, and graduated in 1912. She then attended college at the College of Charleston, Radcliffe College, and Columbia University, and received an honorary degree from the College of Charleston. 1935. In 1946, she was given the Southern Authors Award.

Josephine Pinckney Career

Writing career

Pinckney, a writer, novelist, and essayist, was a prominent participant in the Charleston Renaissance. In 1920, she co-founded the Poetry Society of South Carolina. She was involved in museums including the Charleston Museum and Dock Street Theatre, and she was an early promoter of Charleston's historic preservation. She was a founder and member of the Society for the Preservation of Spirituality, which transcribed and annotated African American songs. Both groups met at Pinckney's home at 21 King St. in Charleston for the first time.

She died in October 4, 1957, and is buried in Magnolia Cemetery.
