LIZ JONES'S DIARY: I see light at the end of the tunnel

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 20, 2024
I text David to tell him I'm so nervous about moving and marrying him that I wake at 4am every day, stomach churning. Even the dogs are still snoring. I've never been vulnerable like this with him before. I have always put on a brave face, leaving him to read about my insecurities later. But he surprises me by being incredibly supportive.

After accepting his Olivier for best new play at the Royal Albert Hall last night, Graham joked that he would start work on the adaption tomorrow morning - once the celebrations were over. He also said he hoped that the Football Association was listening and he can get tickets for the Euros in Germany later this year.

Three'safe' book adaptations, a spin-off of The Split, and a television version of Gareth Southgate's Gareth Southgate appear in upcoming BBC series, with three of them 'risky and boundary pushing'

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 23, 2024
On Wednesday evening, the BBC's Director of Drama Lindsay Salt said the British broadcaster was going to take risks, push boundaries, and venture into the unknown.' Of the twelve dramas that have been announced, some are'safe' book adaptations, others are follow-ons of well-known shows, and one is a TV version of Gareth Southgate's beloved play. All in all, the list seems to be hardly ground-breaking, and Southgate-inspired series even sees Joseph Fiennes reprise his role as England's football manager. Blue Lights has been renewed for a second series, as well as a spin-off of the hugely popular The Split (the steamy legal drama starring Nicola Walker) and three shows based on novels. However, although it may seem that the broadcaster is simply running out of original content as it depends on adaptations for half of the latest productions, a marketing consultant has stated that there is simply more money in this strategy.

OLIVER HOLT: Dear England, I have one wish for 2024: Get behind Gareth Southgate and wake up before it's too late and we lose him

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 1, 2024
OLIVER HOLT: Last week, I returned to the West End of the old year to see Dear England at the Prince Edward Theatre. Thousands of football fans attended, young and old, and many of them were eager to see it as a special Christmas treat. It's a play that will likely last into the new year, into the summer of the European Championships in Germany and elsewhere. Dear England is about Gareth Southgate, who is attempting to change the culture around the England men's football team, to eliminate fear of failure and ridicule that gripped players when they joined the national team and, in the process, lift the team's hopes of winning their first major trophy since 1966. The play is remarkable for Joseph Fiennes' brilliant appearance as Southgate, but in other respects it delves into simplistic and patronizing footballer caricatures of footballers, as well as many of the people around them. There are just too many cheap laughs in this episode.

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: King Charles has reportedly already written his Christmas Day message without recourse to advisers

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 20, 2023
EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: This is the first time a government official was allowed to make minor updates to fit with archive footage supplied by the designers.

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Ned Guinness, 4th Earl of Iveagh puts his family's coronation robes up for sale barely four months after King Charles was crowned

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 13, 2023
EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Iveagh, 54, tells me that the robes were last used by his great-grandparents at Elizabeth II's coronation. They were the original owners of the majority of the 461 lots under fire at The Guinness Sale in Elveden Hall, Suffolk's ancestral seat. Sworders have lowered the price of the robes by £3,000 to £5,000, which Iveagh claims has been "in storage for the past 20 years," says Iveagh. The purchase, he says, enables 'Elveden' to be more freed up. The dining room is stunning. It can be used more than [being] a storage space."

EXCLUSIVE: Dervla Kirwan, a Ballykissangel actress, has revealed that she's 'thrilled' to appear alongside Joseph Fiennes in a Dear England play about Gareth Southgate

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 12, 2023
There has been a big new signing as the National Theatre company's Gareth Southgate's attempts to improve the team's fortunes as a result of the team's big West End trade. When it heads to the Prince Edward Theatre in October, I heard that Ballykissangel actor Dervla Kirwan will appear alongside Joseph Fiennes, who plays Southgate. Dr. Pippa Grange, the psychologist who helped improve the players' mental stability, will take over from Gina McKee.

Following the roaring success of National Theatre, Gareth Southgate's stellar tenure as England manager is expected to be turned into a Netflix series

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 13, 2023
According to reports, Netflix's bosses ordered a series based on the play Dear England, which has enjoyed a well-reviewed run at London's National Theatre and has been seen by 75,000 people since it opened in June. The play, written by James Graham and starring Joseph Fiennes as Southgate, tells the manager's tale from when he took over Sam Allardyce in 2016 right up to England's World Cup bid in Qatar last year. However, it does include a flashback to when he missed a penalty in Euro 96.

Need a place to host your party?Well be my guest! ALEXANDRA SHULMAN, the former Vogue boss, is quoted as the reason for the confusion

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 25, 2023
ALEXANDRA SHULMAN: People who are either visitors or hosts are divided in life. Guests love someone else arranging everything and then participating in activities planned for them, while others are dissatisfied with being on someone else's timetable or in their space. I am, by nature, a visitor. I love going to other people's parties and not knowing who will be there. Or staying in their homes and having their schedule managed by them. Despite being the best of them in several regions, I am relieved to leave the catering to someone else.

Gareth-from-Crawley, the man who restored the Three Lions' pride, has written a letter. MARMION'S PATRICK MARMION comments Dear England

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 23, 2023
PATRICK MARMION: Gareth Southgate, the waistcoat M&S fashion icon and England boss, will not be able to attend his beatification at the National Theatre. Fair play to him, but it is most likely that this modest son of West Sussex would be more than a little uncomfortable for him to attend a near three-hour dedication to his illustrious service as coach of the national team. Particularly when he's so touchingly portrayed by Hollywood actress Joseph Fiennes. The pleasure in this play begins with 'Big Sam' Allardyce''s'resignation by mutual agreement' as the England team's boss in 2016.

King Charles has confirmed his opposition to accepting same-sex civil marriages

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 22, 2023
EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: In choosing Dr Christopher Cocksworth as his next Dean of Windsor, has King Charles confirmed his opposition to the Church of England's decision to bless same-sex civil marriages? One of two bishops who refused to offer prayers and blessings to same-sex couples was Cocksworth, a "open evangelical." It was believed that his defiance of any hopes of ascension to the greasy pole of awakened Anglicanism. The King had other plans, as shown by his description.

Dear England FIRST LOOK: Joseph Fiennes is the spitting image of Gareth Southgate in new play

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 20, 2023
For a new performance at the National Theatre, Joseph Fiennes appears unrecognizable as he transforms into England boss Gareth Southgate. In a new play entitled Dear England, which will be seen at the Olivier Theatre this summer, the Handmaid's Tale actor has been cast as the former midfielder, both 52. In first glance snaps, Joseph is the spitting image of the football star as the actor sports goatee and his hair slicked back.

JAN MOIR: Dear England, a Gareth Southgate-inspired play, brought me to tears

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 14, 2023
JAN MOIR: Gareth Southgate isn't going to see Dear England, the play about him that has just opened at the National Theatre in London. 'No, I won't be going to watch it.' It wouldn't be right,' he said, which is so on-brand for the England football manager, so much Gareth as well as him. He also stated that being portrayed by actor Joseph Fiennes was "generous casting," but that the performance should not be about the team, not about him. Modest to a fault, as ever. However, the play is mainly about him - and how he turned a semi-derelict squad into a force to be reckoned with, and became England's most effective manager since Sir Alf Ramsey.

Joseph Fiennes now regrets playing Michael Jackson in a 2016 episode of Urban Myths

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 13, 2023
Joseph Fiennes admitted that being a part of the late Michael Jackson's portrayal was a 'wrong call' and a "wrong choice." In a 2016 episode of the British TV series Urban Myths, Michael Jackson was portrayed by Fiennes, 53, loosely based on true tales about celebrities. The trailer for that episode, which came after a post-9/11 road trip taken by Jackson, Marlon Brando (Brian Cox) and Elizabeth Taylor (Stockard Channing), was immediately controversial.

However, Lady Amelia Windsor is much more than just dismissing any unintended remark, she has been making royal history in her own understated way. www.dailymail.co.uk, May 1, 2023

Tchaikovsky has been dead for more than a century, but the ladies are still delighting him. Some social media users wondered if they should listen to more classical music while others wanted to know the identity of the mysterious woman. Several people moaned during the symphony's second march, igniting a fierce debate online over the reasons.

In Netflix's "The Mother" Teaser, Jennifer Lopez Is an Assassin on the run

www.popsugar.co.uk, January 19, 2023
Forget J Lo the rom-com queen: in Netflix's "The Mother" actress Stephanie DeSilva: the "Shotgun Wedding" actress is actually turning it up as a deadly assassin. Jennifer Lopez's character comes out of retirement to shield the daughter she gave up years before — by any means appropriate. But did we mention she's also on the run from some extremely dangerous men? Lopez's character is nothing to play with in the middle of a snowy winter, according to a teaser trailer for Netflix's Tudum fan festival in September 2022. (Sheesh!) The film had "the spirit of the Luc Besson[-directed] masterpiece 'The Professional,' the 1994 film about a 12-year-old girl who wants to become a hitman after her parents are murdered by a corrupt DEA agent, according to a Deadline.
