Life and career
Joseph Henry Delaney was born on July 25, 1945, in Preston, Lancashire, the son of a labourer; he was the youngest of four children. Delaney graduated from Preston Catholic College and spent time as an apprentice engineer and fitter. He completed his A-Levels at night school before attending Lancaster University's English, history, and sociology. He trained at St Martin's College to become a mentor after graduating. He later became an English tutor at Blackpool Sixth Form College, where he helped with the Media and Film Studies Departments. Delaney obtained a degree from Open University in the 1980s in the hopes of becoming a computer programmer. In 1983, he moved to Stalmine, where he later discovered that a boggart had been discovered by a priest; he reported this down and the find later became the source of the Spook's series.
Delaney's first works were published under the pseudonym J. K. Haderack; a nodle to Frank Herbert's Dune universe's Kwisatz Haderach. His agent encouraged him to write for a younger audience after struggling to find success with fantasy and science fiction books for adults, and he wanted to meet the briefing of a children's publisher. Delaney created a book based on a tale he wrote in 1993 that was inspired by Stalmine's boggart, as well as Lancashire folklore and other tales to fulfill the brief's requirements. He published The Spook's Apprentice, under his new name, in 2004, which became the first book in Spook's series. Delaney's lead character, Tom Ward, achieved international recognition for his adventures. The series has been published in 30 countries, with sales exceeding 4.5 million copies. Delaney transitioned from teaching to writing full time following the release of the second book in the series. Delaney, who is similar to Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, used his dreams to inspire his writing.
The science fiction Arena 13 trilogy was released from 2015 to 2017. He published the darker fantasy Aberrations series from 2018 to 2019.
Delaney, a retired Manchester resident, died on August 2022 following a bout of illness; he was 77 years old.
