Jose Maria Peman Life

José Pemán y Pemartn, born in Cadiz, in 1897, was a Spanish journalist, poet, novelist, essayist, and right-wing intellectual. He began as a law student, and with a collection of poetic works inspired by his native Andalucia (De la vida, A la rueda, El barrio de Santa Cruz, and Las flores del bien).

He began as a journalist in the 1930s.

He joined the Real Academia de la Lenna in 1935, of which he served as the director from 1939 to 1945 and 1947. Pemán also blurred literary genres and created a unique style that may have been as equidist between classicism and modernism. He wrote historical-religious verse (El divino impreciente et Cuando las Cortes de Cádiz y Cisneros), and comedies based on Andalusian myths (Julieta y Romeo and El viento sobre la tierra). Pemán based several classical works (such as Antigone, Hamlet, and Oedipus).

In a collection of books and short stories (including Historia del fantasma, Cuentos sin importance, and La novela de San Martn), he demonstrated his narrative skills.

He was also a well-known essayist. In 1955, he was awarded the Mariano de Cavia award for journalism.

He received the March de Literatura award in 1957.

He served as the personal advisor to the Count of Barcelona from 1969 to the dissolution of the entity.

He was appointed Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1981, just months before his death. Pemán was one of the few influential intellectuals to advocate for Francisco Franco and the Falangist Movement.

This ensured his professional success during and after the Civil War, but it also damaged his international reputation. Pemán wrote a series of unofficial, but "officiose" popular lyrics for the Marcha Real, which Franco reestablished as Spain's national anthem in 1939 in an unofficial and never formal manner, musical only, in defiance of some common mistrust concerns regarding Marquina's lyrics officialty.

He was never posted on the BOE (Official State Bulletin) lyrics, which were also in use by some nostalgics during the Transition period.
