Career
López began karting in 2001 before progressing to the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup in 17th place, finishing in 17th position and one of the fastest lap. He remained in the series for the 2002 season of Cram Competition, finishing fourth in fourth position and winning by a single point. He competed for Cram in Italian Formula Renault last year, winning four races and defeating Robert Kubica to the crown. He appeared in the Formula Renault V6 Eurocup in 2003, his first participation with the DAMS team in his first tenure, winning the title with five races wins.
With the CMS crew, López made it to International Formula 3000 in 2004, finishing sixth overall. He also competed in four different countries last year, winning in four different series.
In 2005, López competed in the inaugural season of the GP2 Series, making him one of the handful few drivers in the series with no prior participation in Formula 3000, which GP2 replaced. He came in ninth place in the DAMS team's standings. He made the move to Super Nova Racing in 2006, finishing tenth in the standings.
López competed in the American Le Mans Series in the early part of 2007, racing a Ferrari 430 GT for Corsa Motorsports/White Lightning in the 12 Hours of Sebring and St. Petersburg's Risi Competizione.
In 2007, López returned to Argentina to compete in TC 2000, the country's biggest production-based touring car championship. He was 5th in that year, gained the drivers' crown in 2008, and successfully defended this crown in 2009. In 2008, López joined the Turismo Carretera and the Top Race V6 in 2009; he became the 2009 TRV6 champion. After falling out on an oilspill on the 18th lap of the season's final race of the season, he barely came close to winning three separate championships in the same season.
In 2008, he participated in selected races of the FIA GT Championship for the ACA Argentina team.
López served as a member of the Renault Driver Development Program from 2004 to 2006, and was a test pilot for Renault F1 during the 2006 season.
López announced in November 2009 that he had a contract with the current US F1 team to compete in the 2010 Formula One season provided he had obtained an eight-million-dollar sponsorship package. According to reports close to López, he already had eighty percent of the funds needed to guarantee his place in the team.
On January 25, López was revealed as the head of US F1's team. Carlos Reutemann, a close friend of US F1 principal Peter Windsor and a leading politician in Argentina, helped put together the funding for López. Complications in USF1's development and ambiguity about whether USF1 will remain in F1 for 2010 caused rumors that López was in talks with rival team Campos in order to secure his spot in F1. In late February, his boss announced it. He was released from his employment on March 2nd, 2010 after US F1 did not want to start racing. Karun Chandhok completed the 2010 grid by signing for Campos (later renamed the Hispania Racing F1 Team), leaving López without a race drive.
In 2010, López continued to drive for Honda in the Argentine TC 2000 championship, finishing 6th. He was named the highest racing driver of Argentina's last decade in that year in that year. He switched to Fiat in 2011 after a brief stay in the US. For the third time, he won the (super) TC2000 championship for the third time, with PSG16, a privateer team.
He made his World Touring Car Championship debut with Wiechers-Sport at the 2013 FIA WTCC Race of Argentina, substituting for regular driver Fredy Barth. He won both the Yokohama Independents' Trophy and finished as overall champion in race two.
He joined the Citron team in 2014 and became the 2014 World Touring Car Champion, winning 17 races out of 23 races, but also dominating his two co-mates : Yvan Muller and rookie Sébastien Loeb. José Mara López won ten games, much like Yvan Muller's record.
José Mara López is expected to have more difficulties in 2015 as a result of my knowledge, they will push harder, and you can see this already how Honda is pushing more, the Chevrolet drivers, and the whole Citro team. "And yet, he won the first half of the season with his colleagues on the Citro-Elysée WTCC."
López was announced as DS Virgin Racing's second pilot for the third season of the FIA Formula E Championship in July 2016 and finished ninth in the Drivers' championship. At the Marrakesh round for Dragon Racing in the 2017-18 season, he returned to Formula E for the 2017-18 season, replacing outgoing Neel Jani.
